The city maintains over 50 parks and other green space throughout the city for the enjoyment of its residents. The most popular park is Falls Park which runs along the Big Sioux Rivers and features a beautiful green space by the amazing waterfall. The park also has a 16 miles biking, jogging, and walking trail that passes through the park and follows along the riverbed. During the winter many people snowshoe and cross country ski through the parks and along the river. Great Bear Recreation Park has skiing, snowboarding, and tubing during the winter and consists of three ski lifts and four trails for tubing.

The weather in Sioux Falls varies greatly throughout the year with hot and humid summers and cold, dry winters. The amount of snowfall during the winter months is less than most people think, with only about 40 inches per year which is much less than more northern parts of the state. The average high temperature during the summer is around 80-85°F and the low during the winter months is from 3-10°F. During the winter months there is very little sunlight and is considered a very low amount of sunlight for states in the US. Even during the summer the amount of sunlight can be low, sometimes causing for dark depressing days.

Topeka is home to the Hill’s Bark Park, a large dog park that is split into an off-leash area for small dogs and an area for large dogs. Each part of the park is equipped with water stations for dogs and humans, benches and picnic tables, and open shelters for some protection from the sun. The park is also lighted at night so that residents can use the park at night, making it a great place for anyone that wants to take their dog to the park after work. The park also has toy boxes and disposal bags and trash cans, making it an all inclusive and very user friendly place to go. The park has grassy areas and mulched areas where dogs tend to run more and play fetch. Unfortunately, there are no available apartments that allow large dogs, but there are many place that allow cats and small dogs.

Living in Topeka is very cheap compared to national averages for rental rates and with over one third of the city being renter occupied finding an apartment is not that difficult. A one bedroom apartment will only run you about $550, while a two bedroom is less than $700. A three bedroom apartment is around $900 and a little more for apartments that are larger. The apartments near the downtown district are generally more expensive, but nothing outrageous. If you are running on a tight budget, but still want to be in a city, Topeka may be the right place for you considering the number of one and two bedroom apartments that are available for under $500.

The Boone County School District is in charge of public education in Florence, and as someone who actually attended the schools here years ago (more than I’d like to admit), I would say that they were excellent, and from what I hear now they have only gotten better. Schools such as Erpenbeck, A M Yealey, Ockerman, and Boone County High are places I’ve read exceptionally good things about. The private schools here (there are two or three) are also great... you have a lot of options if you decide to rent in Florence.

Florence is around 15 minutes south of the Ohio border, and about 20 from Cincinnati, although it could be closer to 30-40 with traffic during rush hour. The easiest way to get to the city is to take Interstates 71/75. About 94% of people who live here drive to and from work every day, which is definitely the majority. Another 3.4% take public transit or another mean of transportation, like walking or biking. The average commute is 24 minutes, this is the same as the state average and two min less than the US average.

If you look at a map, you will see that Covington is practically located in Ohio (it is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area, after all). So the temperatures here a bit colder than the temps you would experience in southern Kentucky. Some feel it more than others -- I’m from Louisville and think that there’s a noticeable difference. The average low in the winter is usually in the 20s, but thaws out nicely in the summer when the average highs are consistently in the 80s. The precipitation is pretty consistent year-round, but is a little heavier in April and May.

Covington has one of the finest recreational systems in the region, if not the country, for a city its size. The city has around 35 parks that they maintain and keep open for the public. The largest is Devou Park, which spans 704 acres. Many residents enjoy summer days there, as it has a bandshell theater, pavilion, three picnic shelters, a golf course, and a lake. This is just one example of all the beautiful facilities in Covington -- some of the other amenities are sports complexes, wildlife areas, biking trails, and playgrounds.

If you’re looking to rent in an urban setting, Cincinnati is an often overlooked but fantastic place to live. Forbes named it the fifth most affordable U.S. city in 2011, and they also named it the best city for young professionals in Ohio (#18 in the U.S), and #9 on their list of best American cities to raise a family. Prevention Magazine named it the most walkable city in Ohio and among the top ten in the country. I haven’t even mentioned the best award -- Amazon.com named it the seventh most romantic U.S. city. Cincinnati is a growing city that has a fantastic rental market that you should at least look into. If you need help, feel free to contact me.

Even though Cincy is the third largest city in Ohio, the culture here is second (or third) to none! The city has great pride in its sports, like the MLB’s Reds (which has three more titles than the Indians, but that’s a story for another day) and the NFL’s Bengals. Of course, other culture like art and music thrive too-- the city was named the #5 arts destination in the U.S. by American Style Magazine, and one of the top ten U.S. “Cities That Rock” in Esquire. The city also hosts a variety of events annually, ranging from cultural parades to music and film festivals.

Although many people live and work within the city, some residents work in the New Haven area and the Hartford area. New Haven is about 20 miles away and takes about 40 minutes, depending on traffic. Hartford is about 30 miles away and takes about 30 minutes as well since the route takes I-84 the entire way, however this route is more variable to traffic than the route to New Haven. Residents can also take the Connecticut Transit bus from Waterbury to New Haven which takes about an hour and ten minutes.

Waterbury has thousands of renters throughout the city and almost 50% of housing is occupied by renters. Compared to the surrounding areas, Waterbury is a very cheap place to rent with an average rent of $599 for studio, $692 for one bedroom, $857 for two bedroom, and $987 for a three bedroom apartment. The average rent for a two bedroom apartment of seven surrounding cities had an average rent of $1106, $250 more than the average for Waterbury. For a major metropolis of the state and the northeast, Waterbury is a very affordable and renter friendly place to live.

The rate of violent crimes in Midland has been consistently lower than the state and national rates, with about 20% less violent crimes. Over the past few years the rate has been dropping, but so has the state and national rates for violent crimes, so the percentage has not changed. The property crime rates are slightly higher than the national rate, but are still lower than the state rate. The property crime rates for Midland, Texas, and the country have changed very little in the last few years, so residents should take precautions to make sure they are not a victim of such crimes. Future renters should look for apartments that are equipped with security systems.
