Although there are not a huge number of restaurants to chose from, Peoria still offers a variety of dining experiences. Magnolia’s on Prospect is one of the nicest places to eat in town and serves steak, seafood, and pasta accompanied by a full bar with a wide selection of bourbon and wine. The Peoria Hofbrau is a German style bar that serves traditional German specialties such as schnitzel, sauerbraten, and various wurst platters. Thanh Linh Vietnamese Restaurant serves traditional Vietnamese food and American style Asian cuisine that features recipes from sour fish to crab rangoons.

Peoria is home to the Vicary Bottoms Dog Park and the Bradley Dog Park. The Vicary Bottoms Park is less of a park and more of an open field that is designated as an area for off-leash dog play. The park is not fenced and does not have any water areas for dogs or drinking fountains, so owners must be confident that their dog will not run away and be sure to bring water for their dog on a hot day. The BradLey Dog Park is a fenced in facility with water stations and a waste station. As of right now there are three apartment complexes that allow cats and small dogs, but none that allow large dogs within 30 miles of Peoria. If you have a large dog and are looking to rent in Peoria, try contacting an apartment that says “contact for pet policy” or look back in a few weeks.

Lake Springfield is a major attraction for residents and visitors to Springfield and is a perfect place for boating, swimming, fishing, and other water sports. Any form of boating is allowed as long as the boat is under 35 feet and swimming can only be done in designated areas off the shore of lakeside parks. People can fish from the shore or their boats and have the possibility of catching up to 15 different species of fish. The Henson Robinson Zoo, Lincoln Green golf Course, and a number of parks are all located along the lake, making any day at the lake even more exciting.

Springfield is dedicated to providing affordable housing for all residents that qualify and is currently working to create more affordable housing. Currently, four homes for rent are available on myapartmentmap and more listings will most likely appear within the next few months. The current listings are accepting section 8 housing vouchers and provide very reasonable rental rates, especially for the size homes being offered. If you are looking to apply for section 8 housing, or are looking for more information, you can go to the Springfield Housing Authority’s website.

With its proximity to major roads, great public school system, low crime, solid recreational programs, and public transportation options, I can’t think of any faults that would make Roselle unattractive to renters. The number of available rentals has increased over the years, as renting has become a growing trend. There is a good sampling of properties on this site, but there are rentals constantly entering and leaving the market, so make sure you check Roselle’s listings often.

Traffic & Commuting

Traffic & Commuting

Roselle has direct access to the Elgin O’Hare Expressway, and Routes 19 and 20, which run through the small city. 19 eventually hooks up with Interstate 290 a mile or two outside of Roselle. Then, all you have to do to get to Chicago is ride 290 for 25 miles. To commute to Naperville, Route 20 will take you to Interstate 355, and after driving south on it for 15 miles you’re there. Both of these commutes are fairly easy, and a lot of residents drive to either city for work every day. Roselle also has great access to the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor, which is a nearby region where a lot of high-tech companies are headquartered.

If the name of Elmhurst sounds familiar, it’s probably because you’ve heard of Elmhurst College. It’s one of the most respected liberal arts institutions in the state of Illinois, and has 3,400 students. Parents love to hear this because they can enroll their kids in Elmhurst’s great public schools, then when they graduate high school, they can stay in town and go to Elmhurst College. Even if it doesn’t always work out this way, it’s definitely a feasible option! As I mentioned, Elmhurst has an excellent public school system, but there are also private schools in the area that parents can look into as well.

Elmhurst provides a more tranquil, family-friendly alternative to the bustling hub of Chicago. There’s nothing wrong with living in the city, but when it comes to raising a family and finding a great home, a suburb like Elmhurst is a perfect place to live. I can’t think of a better suburb in the area. In fact, Elmhurst and Plainfield are the top safest suburbs of Chicago according to Neighborhood Scout. If you’re looking for a great family environment with little to worry about, Elmhurst will be a great fit for you.

Apartment Costs

Apartment Costs

If you looked at My Apartment Map’s rental data for Villa Park, your jaw would probably drop when you saw the average rent for a two bedroom apartment: $1710 a month. This would make it the most expensive, by far, median rent in the area. But, I don’t think this price accurately reflects the rental market in Villa Park. The sample size for apartments in Villa Park is small right now because there aren’t a lot of vacancies. I think an accurate average would be around $1400 for a two bedroom, but it could be more or less, depending on where you look.

Local Events

Local Events

Jeremiah Steadman - Property Manager

The village of Villa Park sponsors a lot of local events to get people outside where they can mingle with neighbors and friends. The French Market takes place every week in the summer; think of an organic farmer’s market, but with a European twist. Also, in the Dupage Forest near Villa Park, there are summer events every week -- fishing, archery lessons, wagon tours, blacksmithing lessons, etc. There are also weekly get-togethers with the Village Board over coffee, pet walks, and of course, holidays are also celebrated.

Economy and Jobs

Economy and Jobs

After the unemployment rate in Glendale Heights dipped to a decade-low of 3.2% in October 2006, it has escalated to historic highs. Throughout the village’s history, the unemployment rate here has consistently been in single digits. Then, in March 2009, it hit 10%. It peaked at 11.5% in June 2009; this isn’t nearly as bad as what happened in other parts of the country, with some unemployment rates hitting 20%, but for a village that typically has a stable economy it was tough. Since then, the rate has fluctuated, but is currently at the lowest it’s been in the young decade: 8%. We’ll see what the rest of 2012 has in store for us, but in the past year I’ve seen a lot of local companies start hiring again, and a lot of jobs opening up as well. Glendale Heights’ economy hasn’t yet fully recovered, but I expect it to do so in the upcoming years.

Pet Friendly

Pet Friendly

Jeremiah Steadman - Property Manager

Stonegate, the Glenlake Club, and Fordham Glen are a few pet friendly buildings in Glendale Heights, so if you plan on settling down with an animal you should at least browse their listings. There are also a bunch of individual properties -- that is, they aren’t part of a complex and are usually user uploaded onto the internet -- that are pet friendly, or have a pet policy that is negotiable depending on your animal. For example, most landlords will agree to let you live with a dog if it’s smaller, but larger dogs aren’t usually treated as favorably. That’s why when you browse pet friendly listings, you’ll see that a lot of buildings allow cats and small dogs, but not big dogs. Finding a pet friendly rental can be tricky, but hopefully this site can help you out. If not, contact me.

I’ve talked to a lot of prospective renters who ask me what Lombard’s restaurants are like. Sometimes, that’s one of the first questions I’m asked! Whether you’re a foodie or not, it’s nice to have restaurants or cafes near your home. It makes getting a coffee in the morning, a sandwich for lunch, or a dinner at night much easier. If you rent in Lombard, you will undoubtedly develop some go-to favorites. For example, my favorite food is Italian, so I absolutely love the Brio Tuscan Grille, and Praga. Your tastes probably differ from mine, but no matter what type of food you like, you’ll find a great restaurant in Lombard.

The Metra commuter rail train, which runs from Chicago to St. Charles, has a stop in Lombard. This is perfect for residents who work in Chicago, students who take classes there, teenagers who want to go and experience all of the city’s weekend activities, or for people who have friends or family there. It may take longer than driving, but at least you don’t have to deal with traffic! The Pace bus service also has a number of routes in Lombard.

Westmont is located in between Naperville, which is 11 miles to the west, and Chicago, which is 22 miles to the east. I know a lot of people that commute to either one of those cities every day and have no problem doing so. I’d say that of the two drives, Chicago is a bit more difficult because traffic can really drag during rush hour. Another advantage of living in Westmont is that you have great access to both Route 83 and Interstate 88. And once you get on 88, it’s a straight shot to either Naperville or Chicago.

Clients always ask me one question when it comes to the safety of their future home: “Will I feel safe walking alone at night?” My answer, believe it or not, is not always an automatic yes. I place a serious importance on safety, and I’m always very honest about what neighborhoods are like. That’s why I highly recommend looking for a rental in Westmont; it’s one of the safest towns in the entire state. If you had to walk alone at night here, you would feel fine doing so. I’d say the safest part of town is the northern area, near Route 34 and Washington St.

If you look at the rental listings for Glen Ellyn on this site, you’ll be able to find a handful of apartments for less than $1000. That might sound unremarkable to you if you’re not familiar with the market in the area, but the truth is that it’s tough to find a decent place for under $1000. And if you want two or more bedrooms, it’s that much more difficult to find a bargain. But right now, surprisingly, I see two or three listings that are two bedrooms and are less than a thousand. Glen Ellyn may not have the largest rental market, but I definitely think that if you follow it you’ll be able to find a nice bargain.

Glen Ellyn has three districts that serve the village: Glen Ellyn School District 41, Glenbard Township High School District 87, and Community Consolidated School District 89. They all operate different schools, and have created one of the finest public school systems in the state of Illinois. The overall grade Great Schools gave the village for their education is a 9 out of 10, and usually that website is very trustworthy. Glen Ellyn is also the home of the College of DuPage’s main campus. The college is one of the largest in the state, with an enrollment of around 30,000 students.

Downers Grove’s Park District is one of the best in the state, without a doubt. You could go to a different park every day in a month and still have 20 more to go (there are around 50 overall). Together, these parks combine for about 600 acres! Half of them (24) have full playgrounds, and additionally there are 17 sports fields and 17 tennis courts. So you can spend a day enjoying Downers Grove’s amenities and the countless events the village throws every year, or you can drive 25 miles and enjoy Chicago. And right next to the city is Lake Michigan, which is always a great place to spend a day or two. If you live in Downers Grove, it takes about a half hour to drive there.

If you look at apartment prices in the area, you would be lucky if you could find a two bedroom rental that was under $1000. In Downers Grove, the average two bedroom costs $1323. If you’re wondering why properties are especially expensive here, it’s because the village is very wealthy. Only 1.3% of families are below the poverty line. And, the median family in Downers Grove makes $96,327 a year, which is almost double the U.S. and Illinois state average.

Residents of Crystal Lake use the Metra Rail Union Pacific Northwest Line in order reach the greater Chicago area. The Pace Bus system is used by residents to access the suburbs surrounding Crystal Lake. The system has a number of park and ride stations for commuters in the area and a call and ride service. The call and ride service is a curb-to-curb service that takes residents from one location to the next if reserved in advance.

The commute to the greater Chicago area takes about an hour, however the ride may be longer depending on the amount of traffic. Many people also work within the city limits or just outside with an average commute of about 10-20 minutes. Traffic throughout Crystal Lake is very light considering that only one highway traverses the city and Interstate 90 lies a few miles south of the city. The highway that runs through Crystal Lake serves as a connector to many suburbs of Chicago and is commonly travelled by commuters.

Many residents who commute to Chicago ride the Metra Milwaukee District/West Line, which stops in Elgin at National Street, the Elgin Station, and on Big Timber Road and provides access to central Chicago at Union Station. The ride takes about an hour and thirty minutes from the all of the stations, varying by just a few minutes. The PACE bus System also has about 12 routes that operate throughout the Elgin area and reach a number of its suburbs. The buses run their routes about once every 30 minutes, making any trip quite easy if you plan accordingly.

Elgin has a large Hispanic and Latino population and a large Laotian population. These Hispanics, Latinos, and Laotians have made a significant impact on the cultural diversity of the city and have exposed the residents of Elgin to many different cultures. Due to these influences there are a number of shops and restaurants that offer a taste of these various cultures. I personally enjoy the many restaurants that offer authentic Hispanic and Latino cuisine and the markets that have traditional Laotian foods.

There are so many restaurants in Schaumberg that it’s hard for me to pick my favorite. One of the best is Chicago Prime Steakhouse because it has excellent steak, duck, and lamb and also has excellent seafood. Ratings from zagat.com place it as the best restaurant in the city and have given it excellent reviews. Pizzeria Uno and P.F. Chang’s are two of my other favorites, even though they are chains. I always go to Uno’s to get pizza and P.F. Chang’s for whenever I feel like Chinese food--it’s much better than the takeout stuff and better for you.
