If you’ve never experienced New England’s continental climate before, you should know that it’s very unpredictable (ever heard the saying, “if you don’t like the New England weather, wait a few minutes”?). But one thing is certain: the winters are cold, and you will receive a lot of snow on any given year in Marlborough. The average snowfall is 67 inches, or more than five feet! However, it’s not all bad. Spring is gradual, but is beautiful when it arrives. Fall stays at a perfectly cool temperature, and the foliage is incredible. Summer is warm and humid, but thankfully is never as hot as in the southern U.S. cities. Temperatures during that season are usually in the 70s or 80s, which is pretty nice for summer. Overall, if you want to experience the heat and cold of the four seasons, Marlborough is for you.

Marlborough has a property crime rate (PCR) that’s much lower than the average. In fact, it’s a third less than the U.S. PCR and 13% less than the Massachusetts PCR. In this respect, Marlborough is one of the safest places to rent. But the violent crime rate in the area is around the average in both national and state categories. This doesn’t mean that Marlborough is prone to violent crimes, it’s just not as low as its PCR. Personally, I think Marlborough is a safe community that is perfect for families, whether you’re raising one or planning on starting one in the future.

Westborough Public Schools is one of the best districts in Worcester County, Massachusetts, and in the U.S. They are well-funded and consistently have above-average scores on the MCAS (state testing). Their drop-out rate is a mere 0.7%, and their attendance rate is 96.4%. Of the 2010 high school graduates, 99% of them went to college. These staggering statistics tell the story themselves; Westborough is without a doubt one of the best places in the nation for your child to receive a public education.

Public Transportation

Public Transportation

If you live in Westborough and don’t want to drive, there are plenty of options to get you from point A to point B. I have definitely noticed that public transportation is becoming more popular lately, and residents are taking it to get to both Worcester and Boston. The main form of public transportation is the MBTA’s commuter rail; their Framingham/Worcester line services the area. The traffic in the area can be irritating, especially when the drive to Boston is already 45 minutes without it. Taking public transportation bypasses this frustration, and I should also mention that it’s better for the environment, and can cost you less in the long haul.

Shrewsbury has a great location; you have access to two major cities (Boston and Worcester) from here. Worcester is only six miles south, and Boston is 40 miles east. Because Worcester is so close, most Shrewsbury residents have jobs here and only have to commute 15 or so minutes every day. Some residents work in Boston, which is an hour commute (with rush hour traffic) if you drive, but public transportation is also an option. Some people hop on the commuter rail in nearby Grafton or Westborough to get to Boston.

Demographics

Demographics

Shrewsbury has an average income that is higher than most parts of the United States. In 2010, the median household income was 83,608, which was $20,000 more than the Massachusetts state average and nearly double the national average of $55,970. The median income for a family here is even higher as it comes close to six figures, and the percent of families below the poverty line is only around three or four percent. Shrewsbury is definitely more wealthy than your average town or city, and because of this the property prices here are higher than usual.

Worcester’s economy is nowadays prevalent with medical jobs. The largest employer in the city is UMass Memorial Health care with 13,764 employees. This is almost three times as many as the second largest employer, which is the UMass Medical School with 5,678 employees. The school also is home to headquarters for leading companies in the medical field, such as Abbott Laboratories and Advanced Cell Technology. The city also has a financial presence, as it is the national headquarters for Hanover Insurance (1,850 employees) and the Paul Revere Life Insurance Company, a branch of Unum. The popular Polar Beverages is also based out of Worcester, and has 1,400 employees.

Worcester has a variegated nightlife that can be spent clubbing one night, and art viewing the next. Lounges and clubs like the Fusion, Blu Ultralounge, and the Venue are targeted towards the young adults in the city. Museums like the Worcester Art Museum, the EcoTarium (science museum), and the American Antiquarium Society’s national library can be enjoyed by anyone of any age. Music concerts are held at the Palladium, and theater shows at the Hanover Theatre. And, last but not least, Worcester is home to the country’s oldest music festival.

The town also runs basketball camps throughout the summer for a very affordable price for residents. Many of the neighborhoods in Woburn have small neighborhood parks that offer a perfect place for kids to play. There are also three large parks--Horn Pond, Forest, and Shaker Glen--that offer a place to enjoy the outdoors, have a picnic, or play a game on the open green space.
