Bangor doesn’t have as many apartment complexes as other cities, but it makes up for it with its variety of individual properties. That’s not to say that there aren’t any complexes (The Willows, Park East, etc.), but I think your best chance in finding an excellent rental for a great price lies in individual places that aren’t part of a larger building. Why is this better? Well, most of the time these stand-alone properties are houses, which in my opinion is favorable to an apartment or condo. Also, it’s easier to negotiate with the owners of these places than the owners of complexes. So, you’ll be able to rent a nicer property for a lower cost.

Bangor has dramatically revitalized its music scene, and overall culture, recently with its Waterfront Concert Series. Artists like Zac Brown Band, the Beach Boys, Celtic Woman, and Rascal Flatts have performed there. The city also hosts the Bangor State Fair, which is one of the oldest fairs in the nation, and one of the most popular in New England. Bangor renters also benefit from being close to the ocean; the city is just 25 miles from the coast. As for things to do inside the city, there are around 20 parks, and that’s not including the aquatic center, recreational facilities, gardens, etc. Central and Northern Maine have been unfairly criticized by some as being boring, but in Bangor this is certainly not true.

Maine is one of the coldest states in the country in the winter, and even though it’s not as freezing in Auburn as it is up north, you will still freeze if you aren’t prepared. The temperatures stay in the teens or 20s, and can drop into the single digits on cold days. With the wind chill added in, negative temperatures aren’t unheard of. Also, there’s an average of 76 inches of snowfall annually. That’s around the height of a standard NBA player. In the summer, temperatures stay in the 70s and 80s, but can reach the 90s during heat waves. And, like the wind chill in the winter, the humidity in the summer makes the weather more extreme than the thermostat would tell you. A humid summer day in Auburn can be downright hot. Spring is usually rainy, and fall is my favorite season because it’s the perfect in between temperature. It’s not hot, and not cold either.

Auburn and Lewiston are technically considered a single metropolitan area, and there’s a good reason why: the centers of the respective cities are less than a mile apart from each other. If you live in the middle of Auburn and worked in Lewiston, you could walk if you wanted to (I wouldn’t recommend this in the winter, of course). Auburn is also just 30 miles away from Portland, and 20 miles away from the ocean.

The most recent US Census report on Lewiston was pretty exciting for me. I encourage clients who are dead set on buying to at least consider renting, because personally I think it’s a much better option, and now I have some stats to help me present my case. The Census reported that there are 7,353 owner occupied housing units in Lewiston, and 7,780 renter occupied units. I really think that Lewiston is renter friendly, and with the right agent (hint, hint) you can find an excellent rental. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a bachelor or have a family, or want to live in an apartment or a house, the rental market here has many options.

Lewiston may be best known for being home to one of the most elite small colleges in the country, Bates College. It was ranked #21 best Liberal Arts college in the country by US News in 2012, and has many notable alumni, such as Bobby Kennedy. Lewiston is also home to Kaplan University and a University of Southern Maine campus. The Lewiston School Department operates the public education from grades kindergarten to twelfth, and their public schools are generally well-received by the community. However, some parents enroll their children in private school, which Lewiston has a few of as well.
