As San Jose grows, its restaurant scene also becomes richer and more diverse. As with the rest of California, there are fantastic Mexican restaurants here, but there’s also Ethiopian (Walia Ethiopian Cuisine), French (La Foret), Asian Fusion (Creasian), Cambodian (Chez Sovan), and
Thai (Thai Spice), to name a few. Of course, it would be an oversight not to mention that San Francisco is just a short drive north, and it consistently ranks in the top ten best foodie cities in the entire world. But, either way, whether you stay local in San Jose or go to San Francisco, the Bay Area’s restaurants don’t disappoint.

San Jose was the second safest city with a population of over 500,000, with only Honolulu ahead of it, in 2009 based on FBI crime reports. Today it’s still considered to be one of the safest cities, and a great place to raise a family. The chance of being affected by a violent crime is only three per one thousand residents, and 24 per one thousand for a property crime.

San Jose is just 48 miles south of San Francisco, and is 41 miles south of Oakland. If you want to get to the ocean from the city, that will only take 30-40 minutes as well. To get to work every day, you won’t have to go very far if you are interested in the technology field -- San Jose is considered by many to be the capital of Silicon Valley. It is also just 10 miles from computer giant Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, CA. The majority of residents drive a vehicle to work every day (only a small number take public transportation), and the average commute time one way is around a half hour.

There are always hundreds of apartments (at the time of this posting it was nearly 900) available here in Cupertino. There are plenty of reasons to live here -- the headquarters of computer giant Apple are located here, which provides jobs to residents and boosts Cupertino’s economy. Also, it was ranked as one of the nation’s smartest small towns in 2009. And last but not least, it is just a short drive away from San Jose, San Francisco, and Oakland. So, there are plenty of reasons to live here, and plenty of apartments to rent. Just be warned that it’s not cheap, although it is worth every penny you pay.

Sunnyvale’s public transit is provided by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (light rail and bus lines) and Caltrain (commuter rail). Sunnyvale was also named a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists for the amenities and bike paths it provides. It should also be noted that there are two international airports within 30 miles of Sunnyvale, in San Jose and San Francisco.

Crime & Safety

In Sunnyvale, you will always feel safe and protected. It is one of the only cities in the U.S. to have a Department of Public Safety where everyone is trained as an EMT, police officer, and firefighter, so anyone can respond to an emergency in any of the three roles. This in large part is why Sunnyvale has consistently been in the top five safest cities of its population class in the FBI’s annual crime reports since the 1960s. It was even named the seventh safest city in the U.S. by Forbes Magazine in 2009. That year, the violent crime rate here was lower than the U.S. average by 70%, and the property crime rate was lower by 30%.

On California’s Academic Performance Index, which ranges from 200 (lowest) to 1000 (highest), Saratoga High School scored a 933 in 2011 -- one of the highest grades out of any school in the area. On Great Schools, a site that evaluates and grades schools, Saratoga High received a 10 out of 10, and nearby Prospect High received an also stellar 8 out of 10. These public schools have set a precedent here that the elementary and middle schools have also followed, forming an outstanding public education system.

Do you like your food spicy? Traditional or exotic? Here in Saratoga, there are a variety of restaurants that can sate any craving you have, and cook your lunch or dinner the way you like it. There is an Indonesian place called the Indo Cafe, a Mexican eatery named La Cueva, a pizza place called Triple Seven Pizzeria, a Japanese restaurant named Hachi Ju Hachi, and a French establishment called Plumed Horse. These are all acclaimed restaurants in the area, and I’m only naming a few of the many.

Pet Friendly

Pet Friendly

It’s no surprise that a town which is Spanish for “the cats,” is a pet friendly community. But what is surprising is that a group of dog owners decided to make a volunteer group called “Los Gatos Unleashed,” which is Spanglish for “the unleashed cats,” in English, and dedicate their services to making the area pup-friendly. Despite the conflicting name/mission, this group has done a lot for dog owners and their pets in the community -- such as making the city change its name to “Los Perros,” or in English, “the dogs,” for a day. The community also has a dog park, as well as many pet stores, dog walkers, pet boarders/sitters, groomers, etc. for its four-legged friends.

The average cost of a two bedroom apartment here is $2113. To compare prices, the same space costs $1703 in Campbell, $1809 in San Jose, $1926 in Santa Clara, $1957 in Sunnyvale, and $2515 in Cupertino.

Santa Clara is just a few miles (anywhere from 2-5 or so, depending on where you live) from San Jose. The distance is close enough that if you work in San Jose, you can bike or take a short bus route there. However, 89% of residents here drive a vehicle to work (probably because a lot of them work in Silicon Valley, which isn’t as close). 3% of the population take public transit to work, and 5% take other forms of transportation, such as bikes. The majority of residents report that their commute time is between 15-29 minutes.

Santa Clara has an abundance of nighttime activities, and in the upcoming years will gain even more. The San Francisco 49ers are having their new stadium built here, which will be very exciting for the city, which already is home to the San Jose Earthquakes of the MLS. If you’re not into sports, Santa Clara has great restaurants and bars. For a drink, head to either The Lounge, Parcel 104, Woodham’s Sports Lounge, or the Homestead Cocktail Lounge. For bowling, go to AMF Moonlite Lanes, and to catch a flick, go to AMC Mercado 20. Or, if you get bored here, San Jose is just a few miles away.

Campbell is a fairly safe place, earning a B on the site HomeFacts, which studies yearly crime rates in cities and grades them based on how they fare nationally. The results show that Campbell has half as many crimes as the national average -- including zero murders in 2010, the year which the grades are based on. However, property crime in the area was a fourth higher than the national average. If you choose the right neighborhood here (the more dangerous areas are the city center and the neighborhoods east of it), then you will find Campbell to be a safe and family-friendly place.

Public Transportation

Public Transportation

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority provides local transit for the Campbell area. They offer bus services, including express lines, to local stops as well as other nearby cities such as Santa Clara, San Jose, Saratoga, etc. There are also three light rail stations that provide access to these cities as well. Despite these options, public transit is not very popular in the city. Only 2% of the residents here take public transportation to work every day, while 91% drive a vehicle.
