Columbus is incredibly renter friendly, which shouldn’t be a surprise considering how much of a college city it is. In 2010, of all the vacant housing units in the city, 55% were up for rent, and only 17% for up for purchase. This means that the city has a much larger selection of housing for prospective renters than buyers. And, with a median rent of $881, which is nearly a hundred dollars less than the U.S. average, Columbus is affordable. It’s as good of a time now than ever to rent here.

It’s definitely fair to say that Columbus is a college city, as it’s home to the main campus of Ohio State University, which is the ninth largest college in the U.S. (by enrollment) with around 56,000 students. It was also ranked in the top 20 in U.S. News and World Report’s list of the best public universities in the U.S. Columbus State Community College, also in the city, adds another 30,000 students to the mix. Other smaller schools are also in Columbus, such as the Columbus College of Art and Design and Franklin University.

Unfortunately, Columbus is the largest U.S. metropolitan area without local or intercity rails, although there are proposals to build them. Until then, most residents will drive a vehicle to work every day. Currently, 90% of them do. The two interstates that run through the city, 70 and 71, meet together in downtown Columbus, forming “the split,” which is the dreaded area where traffic is congested during rush hour traffic.

When you think of the country’s safest metropolitan areas, the Columbus metro should be one of the first that come to mind. In 2011 it appeared on Parenting Magazine’s 2011 list of Best Cities for Families. The inner city area is more prone to higher crimes; the safer areas are more further out. A real estate agent can help you research and visit each neighborhood to ensure that you’re renting in a community that makes Columbus one of the safest areas for families.

Delaware is home to the Delaware Area Transit Agency (DATA), which provides service throughout the city and Delaware County. Anyone under 18 or over 60 can have access to all 21 of DATA’s stops for only $.50, and anyone 19-59 only has to pay a dollar. Despite the public transit provided by DATA, only .6% of the city’s population takes public transportation to and from work every day.

Delaware by far offers the most recreational opportunities for dog owners in the Columbus metropolitan area, with three dog parks: Companion Club Dog Park, Alum Creek State Park, and the Bark Till Dark Dog Park. Also in Delaware are places to buy any pet necessity (Delaware Pet Stuff), pet groomers (Delaware Pet Grooming), pet boarding/sitting (Whysker Watchers), veterinarians (Oakside Animal Clinic), and even a pet treat store (Pawsitively Purrfect Treatery).

Hilliard is an area of the Columbus metropolitan that is growing rapidly. In the past twenty years, the population has more than doubled. Now, there are hundreds of apartments in the area, and that number will only increase in the upcoming years. Because of its popularity in recent years and proximity to Columbus, Hilliard is a great place to rent.

Hilliard is situated 13 miles southeast of Columbus, which is a 20 minute drive (unless it’s during rush hour, when you’ll face a lot of traffic) on Interstate 270. 93% of Hilliard’s population drives a vehicle to work everyday, and only .6% of them take public transportation. The average one way commute to work for a Hilliard resident is 25 minutes, which is equal to the Ohio average and a minute less than the national average.

A documentary called Children in America’s Schools named Dublin the best public school system in the country. Additionally, Great Schools, a site that evaluates and grades schools based on quality, gave Dublin schools an excellent 9 out of 10 average. The Dublin City School District is in charge of the public education in the city; they operate 13 elementary schools, four middle schools and three high schools.

You’ll never be bored in Dublin with all the recreational amenities it offers. There are 1,000 acres of parks, which includes 77 miles of bike trails, and 39 developed parks. Because of an Art in Public Places initiative, there was a public art tour created for the city, and numerous sculptures and other works put into the parks. Also, the city is home to the Dublin Irish Festival, which is one of the largest of its kind in the entire country.

Columbus has earned many awards recently for its safety, including landing a spot on Parenting Magazine’s 2011 list of Best Cities for Families. Westerville is one of the safer cities in the Columbus metropolitan area, as its overall crime index is 21% less than the Ohio average and 22% less than the national average. The chance of being affected by a violent crime here is only a one in 1901 chance -- violent crimes here are 70% less common than the Ohio state average and 84% less common here than nationally.

Apartment Costs

Apartment Costs

Two bedroom apartments in Westerville began 2012 averaging $807 per month. In February, this average increased to $868, and in May fell to $791. Whoever rents an apartment here now is making a smart move, because that price is sure to inflate back up soon. To have an idea of how Westerville apartment costs stand against other cities in the area, here are some other prices: for the same two bedroom apt, the average for Columbus is $732, Lewis Center is $756, Sunbury is $802, Powell is $857, and New Albany is $899
