The majority of kids in Sacramento (around 48,000 at the last estimate) are served by the Sacramento City Unified School District. There are also private schools, most of which being Catholic institutions, that allow you to enroll your children in any grade K-12. As for higher education, there are several public institutions, such as Sacramento State (28,000 students) and the Los Rio Community College District (71,000 students), as well as other private colleges and universities. There are nearly a hundred thousand students in just the two public schools I named, which shows that there are a fair share of students located in Sacramento’s metropolitan area.

Renting an apartment in a Californian city is not usually cheap, but if you look at the price tags of apartments in Sacramento you will find them to be much less expensive than most of the cities in CA. The median rent for Sacramento changes by month, but right now it’s around $974. Comparatively, here are the median rents for other large cities in California: San Jose - $1,678, San Francisco - $1,646, Los Angeles - $1,088, Long Beach - $1,042, San Diego - $1,194, and Fresno - $815. Of these high profile cities, only Fresno is cheaper than Sacramento.

There are a number of nighttime activities in Sacramento that will keep you from getting bored on the weekends. In the 60 miles between Sacramento and Napa Valley, there are 200 wineries. Sacramento Wine & Nightlife Tours offers opportunities to taste the best flavors, and provide transportation so you can taste as much as you want. Elsewhere in the city, the Sacramento Comedy Spot is a great place to spend an evening laughing, or spend it dancing at Firehouse 5 Dance. No matter what you feel like doing, Sacramento has a nightlife scene that will keep you entertained here.

Sacramento is connected by two interstates and three highways for drivers. If you don’t have a car, the public transit system in the city is the ninth busiest in the U.S, and the Amtrak station is the seventh busiest. Despite this, only 4% of people who live here take public transportation to work every day -- driving definitely dominates the transit here, as this is how 87% of people in the city get to work. However, bicycling is becoming more popular because of the flat terrain and year round warm weather. The city was named a bicycle friendly city by the League of American Bicyclists because of its dedication to bike paths, especially on the American River Parkway.

When you look at the restaurant variety, you will be impressed by how many cultures are represented. For a Mediterranean flavor, make a reservation at either Carmita (also great for vegeterians) or Maranello Restaurant. For authentic southeast Asian dishes, eat at Takieng Thai Cuisine, Siam Patio Thai Cuisine, or Pho No 1. For Japanese flavor, try Yui Marlu or the Mikuni Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar. For French, visit La Boheme, and for Mexican, Cilantro’s Taqueria. I could go on, but rest assured you won’t be disappointed by the dining options here.

Pet Friendly

Pet Friendly

One of the finest dog parks in the Sacramento area, Phoenix Dog Park, is located here in Fair Oaks. This is just one of the amenities that the city offers to pet lovers. For the coolest pet accessories, toys, and even clothes, head to Trends-n-Treats. For medical care, there are plenty of veterinarians in the area, such as the Hazer Ridge Veterinary Clinic, and the Sunset Animal Medical Center. Other local services include grooming (Bonnie’s Pet Grooming), pet training (The Right Steps), dog walking (The Jogging Dog), and pet boarding/sitting (Arianna’s Pet Care), to name a few.

Citrus Heights’ 10,000 students (K-12) are served by the San Juan Unified School District. There are ten elementary schools here -- also, one middle schools, and two high schools. In addition, there are 17 private schools in the area. On the Quality of Life Index created by CLRSearch, which evaluates community surveys to grade communities, Citrus Heights scored an 142 on the Education Index, which is higher than both California’s 108 and the U.S. average of 100, making it above average by national standards.

Citrus is just 15 miles away from Sacramento, and is connected to the city by Interstate 80. This makes the commute around 20 minutes, but rush hour traffic is often backed up and can make it a longer drive. 90 percent of the residents here drive to work, which is higher than both state and national averages. Only 1.75% take public transportation. The average commute to work -- one way -- for residents here takes 29 minutes, which is the same as the California average.

Davis is very well-known for its extensive bike routes, as bicycling is the preferred mode of transportation for many people here. Davis is the only “Platinum Bicycle City” in the U.S., an award given to them by the League of American bicyclists. The community has a strong commitment to making sure bikers feel safe and cared for. They provide many biking amenities, such as biker bridges that go over train tracks, highways, etc., and have their own Bicycle Advisory Commission. It’s estimated that 20-25% of trips are made by bicycle in the city, and a biking culture has formed here. The group of residents that arguably support it most are students at the University of California Davis campus in town.

Crime & Safety

Crime & Safety

Davis is a relatively safe area, scoring half (55) of the national crime rate average (100) on the 2010 crime index. The crimes that were especially low in the area were robbery (23 out of 100) and murder (23). In fact, the odds of being affected by a violent crime in Davis are only two out of every thousand residents. The chances of being affected by a property crime are a little higher: 38 per one thousand.

Elk Grove boasts an incredible wealth of recreational amenities. To begin with, there are 83 total parks, which add up to 611 acres of open space for the public. Additionally, there are 18 miles of trails. Some of the parks are traditional open-spaced land, while others are unique: there are dog parks, sports complexes, a skate park and even a water park. If it’s too hot to go outside, the city also has two community centers, four recreational centers, and two aquatic complexes. When you throw in all the classes and programs offered here, it’s obvious that it’s one of the best recreational systems in the Sacramento metropolitan area.

There are twelve parks total here in Carmichael. The largest by far, and one of the most well-known spots in the area, is Carmichael Park. The park has numerous sports courts/fields, a picnic shelter, the Great Wall of Carmichael (a wall with a mural representing everything that’s great about the community), an off leash dog park, and a pavilion for summer concerts. In addition to parks, the recreational scene thrives here with a botanical garden, community garden, and even a disc golf course.

All of Carmichael’s public schools are in the San Juan Unified school district. There are nine elementary schools, and three middle schools. There currently aren’t any public high schools in Carmichael -- students have to attend one in a neighboring city, such as Fair Oaks, Orangevale, Citrus Heights, or Sacramento. However, there is a private high school called Victory Christian School (K-12).

Rancho Cordova receives light rail and bus services from the Sacramento Regional Transit District, providing convenient access to other communities to Sacramento metropolitan area without having to drive. There are also shuttles and vans offered by Rancho Cordova that can take residents from their homes to the light rail station. Despite these options, only 3.5% of the city’s population uses public transportation to commute to work.

Rancho Cordova fulfilled a large commitment to its four-legged residents when the Hagan Off Leash Dog Park was finally opened last year, after years in the making. Meanwhile, the rest of the city is also focused on making your pets feel welcome here: there are pet groomers (Petsmart Grooming), dog trainers (Drelor Manor Dog Training), pet sitters/boarders (the Local Bark), dog walkers (P.E.T. Your Dog), veterinarians (Cordova Veterinary Hospital), and of course pet stores (Petsmart, Western Feed and Pet Supply).

The North Highlands restaurant scene is a hodgepodge of different culinary flavors. On one corner you can enjoy a Russian dish (Stolichniy Restaurant), then at the next taste a Cuban entree at Sol Cubano. Great variety, although choosing between the two could cause quite a crisis. Other diverse restaurants in the area are the Pattaya Cafe (Thai), El Parian Taqueria (Mexican), Kim Son Mongolian Barbecue (Chinese), and even a Touch of Britain (British).

You will never be bored in West Sacramento -- located just a mile away from Sacramento, the two cities are just a short drive or walk away. Because of this, your nightlife options are limitless, but there are also options if you want to stay in West Sacramento. After enjoying dinner at one of the city’s great restaurants, head to one of the city’s many clubs, such as the Mecca Club, Ortega’s West Night Club, or Sammy’s Astro Club. For a bar, visit Cheers, River’s Edge Bar & Grill, or the Streets of London Pub.
