Schools & Education

There are a variety of post-secondary schools in the West Springfield/Springfield area. There’s Springfield College (the birthplace of basketball), Western New England University, American International College, and Cambridge College--Springfield. Combined, these schools enroll a little under 10,000 students in the area. As for K-12 in W. Springfield, the West Springfield School District is in charge of public education. There are also a handful of private schools that you can send your child to instead, and even more to choose from in nearby Springfield.

Traffic & Commuting

Traffic & Commuting

The only two things separating West Springfield and Springfield’s metro center are the Connecticut River and two miles of road. A lot of people mistake West Springfield for being part of the city, and while this isn’t true (they’re separate cities), they’re close enough to practically be one. If you live here, and have a job/family/friends in Springfield, it will be a very easy commute for you. If the weather’s nice, you could even walk back and forth between the two places. West Springfield is also just six miles from the Connecticut state border, and 29 miles from Hartford, CT, which is a viable, albeit longer, commute.

Renter Friendly

If I had to choose one of Springfield’s suburbs as the most renter friendly, I would probably pick Westfield. If you’re looking for apartments in the area, you will notice that there are significantly more rentals in Westfield than anywhere else around. If you don’t believe me, just look for yourself on MyApartmentMap. In addition to having the most properties (more properties means more variety, so this is never a bad thing), I find that the prices are cheaper here than in neighboring communities. If you’re on a budget or are looking for a specific set of requirements, you can’t beat the crop here in Westfield.

Recreation

Recreation

If you love nature, exercising, or just scenic beauty, you need to check out the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail, which runs through southern New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Westfield is home to one of the most gorgeous sections of it, including East Mountain. In the summer you can hike or bike up it, and in the winter ski down it. You could take the area’s trails every day and probably see something new each time you hike it. There are also great parks and recreational facilities in Westfield, such as the Stanley Park (with a botanical garden and arboretum) and the Amelia Park Ice Rink and Memorial Garden.

Most people think that Holyoke is home to the popular Mount Holyoke women’s college, but this common misconception isn’t true. Despite the name similarity, Mount Holyoke is located in nearby South Hadley. As for the schools that actually are in Holyoke, the public schools from kindergarten to high school are served by the Holyoke School District. If you want your kids to receive a private education, I would recommend looking into the Mater Dolorosa School or the Blessed Sacrament Elementary School.

Economy and Jobs

Economy and Jobs

Holyoke earned its nickname, “The Paper City,” because in the 18th and 19th centuries, its economy produced more paper than arguably anywhere else in the world. Now, the focus has shifted from paper to paperless. High-tech heavyweights like Cisco Systems, the EMC Corporation, and Accenture PLC teamed up with universities like Harvard, MIT, and Boston University, to build the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center, which will go into service in late 2012 and will probably create a lot of job openings in the area. Another staple of Holyoke’s economy is the Holyoke Mall, which is one of the largest in the region and makes $7 million a year in taxes.

One of the best things about Chicopee is the number of comfy little spots the restaurant scene has, such as Al’s Diner and the Lucky Strike Restaurant. Then you have unique places, like the Hu-Ke-Lau Restaurant and Dinner Theatre, which serves Chinese food with a show that you can watch. Personally, I’ve seen some great comedians here in the past. Another unique place is the Munich Haus, a restaurant where the staff actually wears German barmaid outfits. Ontop of all the local, small places are trusted chains as too, like Chipotle and Popeye’s.

Chicopee is the type of place where you can just walk around and be amazed by what you see around you. The Cabotville Common is a historic district that is in the National Register of Historic Places, as is the Carreau Block. Both areas feature architecture that you can’t help but marvel at. There are also around 20 parks that are open to the public in Chicopee, and they have amenities such as spray parks (for those hot summer days), basketball and tennis courts, playgrounds, gazebos, etc.

Apartments here will run you a little more than the average town, because there aren’t as many rentals. You probably won’t be able to find many properties that are under $800, and many of them cross the $1000 threshold. To get a good deal (or even find a vacant place that fits your needs), you will probably need a real estate agent here. Shoot me a message with your requirements and I’ll see what I can do!

Crime & Safety

Crime & Safety

Agawam is continually featured on lists of the safest places in the country. For example, it was ranked the 25th safest town/city in the United States on a list compiled by Neighborhood Scout. On the 2010 Crime Index, which ranges from 0 (safest) to 100 (national average), Agawam scored an astounding 1. The Massachusetts average was 71. So this shows that Agawam is literally a hundred times safer than the average U.S. town, and seven times safer than the average Mass. town. If safety is a priority for you, Agawam is where you should be.

Public Transportation

Public Transportation

Springfield is currently served by Amtrak, Greyhound, Peter Pan, and the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA) for their public transportation. The PVTA bus lines can take residents around the city, and also provide routes out of Springfield to neighboring suburbs. The other three provide service to other cities, such as Boston or New York City, with some stops in between. There is a commuter rail in the works called the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield line that will connect Springfield with the nearby Connecticut cities. This is expected to be completed around 2014.

Renter Friendly

In Springfield, the number of owned properties and rented properties are practically identical. There are 29,720 owned properties and 29,427 rented properties. But when you look at the housing market and the vacancies, there are considerably more rentals on the market. This is tough to measure, but in 2010 an official report showed that there were five times more rentals than for sale properties on the market. Springfield is a very renter friendly city, and can be compared to Worcester and Boston in this respect.

Attleboro is straddled on the Rhode Island and Massachusetts border. Though it’s technically in Mass, it’s considered to be part of Providence’s metropolitan area. Residents of Attleboro can enjoy the urban activities in Boston or Providence, or beaches on the coast of both states. The ocean is only 45 minutes away, but can take less or more time depending on where you’re headed. As for local Attleboro things to do, there is an excellent zoo called the Capron Park Zoo. There are also parks and beautiful areas for open space, such as the Bungay River area or Lake Hiawatha.

Attleboro’s median rent is in a state of flux, of course, but generally is around $1,000 per month. This may seem steep to some, but the U.S. median is around the same, as it usually is anywhere from $850 to $1000. The area is also a bit wealthier than the average town/city in the country if you look at its median income. Regardless, even if you make less than the median, don’t feel discouraged. There are properties in Attleboro that can fit anyone’s budget and needs, and if you need help go ahead and contact me before you start searching.
