You will be able to experience all four beautiful seasons if you rent in Nampa. The summers are very hot (highs are usually around 80-90 degrees F), the winters are snowy and cold (average snowfall is 19 inches and the temperature lows are typically in the 20s and teens), and spring and fall are perfect in-betweens with temperatures in the 50s and 60s. If you’re looking for somewhere that’s warm every day of the year, this is the wrong place, but in my opinion there’s nothing fun about having one season year-round.

The state of Idaho usually has a higher violent crime rate than the U.S. average, but the rate in Nampa is lower than both state and national averages. In fact, the 2010 stats have the city’s violent crime rate at 24% lower than America’s average and 43% less than the state average. Additionally, the property crime rate was also a fifth lower than both averages. Nampa’s community is definitely one of the safest in the state, and I’d go as far to say that it’s one of the best in the entire Northwest.

Meridian is a bonafide suburb of Boise, at just ten miles west. You can easily traverse the two cities using Interstate 84, which directly connects them. If you work in Boise but don’t want to live the urban lifestyle, or if you want more options for a house with a big backyard than the city can offer, then Meridian is a great place to look. It’s also ten miles from the Boise Airport, which is convenient if you want to travel or have friends or family visiting you. Or, if you’re looking for a fun place to go on the weekend, Lake Lowell, the largest lake in the area, is only 18 miles away.

Meridian’s winters are a bit chilly, but their summers are something you can cherish with the entire family. The city isn’t far at all from the Eagle Island State Park, which has 545 acres of park space with a beach, waterslide, dog friendly areas, and more than five miles of trails. However, the most popular thing that Meridian is known for locally is MUM (Meridian Urban Market). This is an event that takes place from spring to fall every Thursday night, and has crafts and farmers markets, art showings, live music, and food and wine/beer tasting. This is a place where you can bring the kids, or enjoy a night out with your significant other. If you want to do something during the day, there is no shortage of options: the city has 17 parks open to the public.

Some people probably wouldn’t associate Boise with other large northwestern cities like Seattle and Portland, but in reality Boise is right behind them as the third most populated city in northwestern U.S. And if you look at Boise’s accolades, they stack up against any other city’s in terms of prestige. In the past few years, Farmer’s Insurance ranked it the safest metropolitan area of 500,000+ people in the U.S., the Earth Day Network named it the 6th most environmental friendly city in the country, Forbes named it the #2 best city for businesses and careers, and the #1 best overall town in the Western U.S. by Outside Magazine. Boise is a city that may surprise you, because it has a comfortable small city feel but has a large population. If this sounds like your type of place, I would suggest renting here.

If you live in Boise you will quickly learn about Boise State University, and the community’s unflinching dedication to their football team. Because the city doesn’t have any professional sports teams, BSU is as close as it gets. The college students in the city are especially passionate -- understandably so. And when they make up a tenth of the city’s population (20,000 enrolled at Boise State alone), their passion spreads to everyone else.
