According to data accumulated, Merrimack is one of the safest cities in the country with over 5,000 residents and was 83rd on the “Top 100 safest cities (lowest crime index).” Violent crimes in Merrimack are virtually nonexistent, with under 20 happening in the last 10 years. Just this summer the Merrimack Premium Outlets, which features 100 outlet stores in tax free New Hampshire. The outlets are a perfect place for any shopping no matter what you are looking for and it will always be at the lowest price. If you don’t feel like spending money and want to be outdoors, there are a number of parks around town that have fields, baseball diamonds, a town skate park, and various camps and activities for kids. Merrimack is also located in a very convenient location for those that want to go to the beach, the mountains, or the city, all of which are just an hour away.

Traffic & Commuting

Traffic & Commuting

With I-93 bordering the western edge of Derry, commuting to Manchester is very simply and only takes about 20 minutes and about 30 minute in moderately heavy traffic. For commuters that work in Nashua, the commute is also about 20 minutes and utilizes back roads the entire route. This can be favorable since there are less accidents and less variability in traffic flow, but the speed limit will be much lower. The route along I-93 to Boston is also relatively quick, only taking about 45 minutes in light traffic. However, this commute will most likely take over an hour, especially during rush hour times.

Schools & Education

Derry is served by five neighborhood elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. The high school, Pinkerton Academy, is an independently owned school, but is non-profit and serves four towns as the primary high school. Pinkerton Academy is known for its excellent academics for both college bound and non college bound students and for its athletics department. Many students in the area also go to Saint Thomas Aquinas School for grades K-8 and then go on to either Portsmouth Christian Academy or Saint Thomas Aquinas High School.

Apartments in Dover, NH, on average, are considered affordable. This is especially true if you compare the rental prices to communities closer to the Seacoast. On average, renters should expect to pay around $800 for a one bedroom, with prices ranging closer to $1200 for a three bedroom apartment.
Dover is also very accommodating to those in search of rent controlled, section 8 or subsidized housing. The Dover Housing Authority(website: http://doverhousingauthority.org/ ) offers help to those in need of rental assistance.

Restaurants

Restaurants

Dover has many great restaurants. Whether you are looking for quick takeout, casual dining, or something a little more fancy, food seekers in Dover will are sure to find something to satisfy their pallets. A few recommendations based on personal experience include:

Fast Food: Head up to the "Miracle Mile" where you will find McDonalds, Wendys, and a Subway and on the healthier side of things; Panera.
Casual Dining: Those looking for a casual sit down meal should try Cartelli's Bar and Grill or Kelly's Row. Both establishments are centrally located in Downtown Dover and both offer quality food in a casual atmosphere.

For those looking for something a little more upscale, try one of the following: Christopher's on Third St, The Chop Shop(some of the best dry aged steaks you can find) or Blue Latitudes(located in the center of town).

Finally, everyone's favorite; Pizza: While Dover is home to a half a dozen or so places that specialize in pizza, there really is only one place to go: La Festa Brick and Brew. La Festa's brick oven pizza is voted one of the best in the Seacoast year in and year out. Don't forget to ask for an order of garlic knots, these are amazing.

Somersworth is a relatively safe community. The problems that plague most small communities, such as petty thefts, a small subsection of drug use and the occasional break-in do occur. According to crime data found elsewhere, Somersworth has only had 2 murders since 1999. In terms of "would I raise my family in Somersworth"? I would have no issues answering "yes" to this question.

While Dover requires pets to remain leased when not on private property, the city is still considered "pet friendly" by many people's standards. Not only are there parks to walk your dogs at while leased, Dover is also home to Longhill Dog Park. Longhill is a dog friendly park that is fenced in, they do not require leashes. On a nice weekend day, I have seen many dog lovers hanging out.

Students looking for public transportation options at UNH in Durham have two options if looking to stay local: COAST and Wildcat Transit. Both serve the student community, both are affordable and both have stops both on campus and the surrounding towns.

Students looking for public transportation to and from further distances can also check out the Amtrak(stops right on campus, CJ Trailways or any of the local taxi cab companies.

Getting around Dover is rather easy. Most residents rely on their cars and traffic is not really an issue. At times the Downtown area can become congested, this usually occurs during business hours due to the areas proximity to shopping and dining. Areas outside of the Downtown area are not prone to traffic and your commute should not be affected.

Dover has some of the finest public transportation in the state of NH courtesy of the COAST. COAST, which manages buses that service a great deal of Strafford County, has provided over 10 million passengers a ride to and from their destination since their inception in the early 1980's. For a small fee, public transportation seekers can board and ride the COAST bus to work, shopping destinations or to the local universities.
In addition to the COAST, Dover is also a stop for Amtrak's Downeaster train. The Downeaster provides riders with transportation from Portland, ME all the way to Boston, MA.
