The San Mateo County Transit agency operates local bus lines for San Carlos residents, which can transport you around the city, or to neighboring cities. The Caltrain commuter rail also has a station here. This service brings residents anywhere as far south as Gilroy to as far north as San Francisco, and anywhere in between. This service is very popular with San Carlos residents who commute to San Francisco for work every day. Still, the majority of people who live here drive a vehicle alone to work every day.

You won’t be able to find as many apartments in San Carlos as in neighboring cities, because, quite simply, with a population of less than 30,000, there are far less people here than in most of the surrounding areas. Among the limited listings you’ll find here, there’s a high median price tag. Most rentals are $1,500 or more. There’s one listing now that’s 4,100 (if you saw the location and view from the windows you would see why), but that’s an extreme case. Keep an eye on the San Carlos market and something you like might pop up, but don’t be surprised if it’s expensive.

Pet Friendly

Pet Friendly

If you browse the local pet friendly listings on this site, you might be frustrated if you own a large dog. There are a good amount of listings that say they accept cats and small dogs, but not large dogs. Only one complex in Livermore that’s listed on My Apartment Map accepts large dogs: the Chardonnay Garden Apartment Homes. That’s all, unless you want to live in the Heritage Park for Seniors. However, a lot of listings say “contact for pet policy.” This can go either way; I would suggest you call up a listing if you like it and speak to the landlord about their policies. If they don’t allow the type of pet you have, see if you can talk them into it.

Livermore’s unemployment rate (5.8%) is currently more than three percentage points lower than the national unemployment rate (8.2%). In fact, during the Recession, Livermore’s rate never peaked higher than 7.7 percent. Livermore’s economy is known for science and wine, an unlikely combination to say the least. The Lawrence Liver National Laboratory is one of the largest employers, and is a research center that is run by the U.S. Department of Energy. It is one of two in the area. Cool fact: Lawrence is known for being the location of the world’s most powerful laser, which they hope will generate a new energy source. Two Universities of California -- Berkeley and Davis -- teamed up with the two national labs in Livermore to create a high-tech campus, called i-GATE., in hopes it would bring high-tech companies and opportunities to the area. As I mentioned, Livermore is also one of America’s oldest wine regions.

There are literally dozens of Redwood City rental listings on this site right now for all you prospective renters who are on the lookout for a place in the area. With so much variety, you get to be very picky about what amenities you want. Furnished? Yup. Pet friendly? Of course. Three bedrooms? Why not? It may still be tough to find three amenities like this in one listing, but individually, there are a number of pet friendly apartments, or rentals with three bedrooms. Renting is becoming just as popular as homebuying around here, and in my professional opinion, I think that right now is a perfect time to look for a rental in Redwood City.

Redwood City is located on the southwestern corner of the San Francisco Bay; eight miles southeast of San Mateo and 25 miles northwest of San Jose. Route 101 can get you from Redwood City to San Jose in a half hour, and from Redwood to San Mateo in fifteen minutes. Of course, traffic can stretch these times longer, and 101 is prone to congestion during rush hour. You can take either Route 84 or 92 to get to the ocean. I’ve found that 92 is a bit quicker, it can get you to the coast in a half hour or so. Other major roads that serve Redwood City are Routes 81 and 101. Interstate 280 is also less than a mile outside of Redwood.

Dublin is, hands down, one of the safest cities in the Bay area. The easternmost neighborhood of town, Komandorski Village, is probably your best bet for safety. The city center is located on the west side of town, and it’s considerably safe when you compare it to the downtown areas of nearby communities. If I had to choose a part of the city that is the least safe, it would probably be the Dougherty area next to Komandorski Village. However, I know of some great listings in that area so... it’s tough to say. I would recommend researching individual neighborhoods to find one that fits you the best.

Restaurants

Restaurants

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that there’s a popular Irish pub in a city named Dublin, right? Alright, now that I’ve made the obligatory joke, I can tell you about the other spots in town where you can enjoy a drink or a meal. The community and its culinary scene benefit greatly from Dublin’s large Asian population (28.6 percent of residents). The first thing you’ll notice when you’re trying to find a restaurant in the area is the local selection of Korean, Thai, Asian fusion, Chinese, and Vietnamese establishments. If you’re into Asian food, you’ll be in heaven here. Of course, there’s also traditional fare like American and European food. Can’t go wrong either way!

Pleasanton holds the distinct title of the “Wealthiest Midsize City in the U.S.,” which resulted from the last U.S. Census figures. At the last estimation, the median income for a household in Pleasanton was $113,345. Needless to say, this is a very wealthy area. If you are still debating whether to buy or rent in Pleasanton, you should know that the average detached single family home goes for $665,000 here. That figure, from 2009, might be a bit lower now because of the state of the real estate market, but it’s definitely still over a half million dollars. However, the rent isn’t very cheap either. The median rent in Pleasanton is around $1,850 right now.

Places like the Brit-tastic Redcoats British Pub and the two punny bars Y’all Come Back Saloon and Grape Times are what makes Pleasanton’s nightlife so interesting. You won’t be overwhelmed with options like in larger cities, but rather there are a handful of great options that you’ll have every time you spend a night on the town. Whether you’re into a dive bar like Past Time Pool, a traditional one like the Main Street Brewery, or a sports-themed spot like the Epic Lounge, you’ll be treated to a variety of places to enjoy a drink. For entertainment, Tommy T’s Comedy & Steakhouse provides laughs, the Firehouse Arts Center has music, and the Neo Nightclub is great for dancing. Some people think Pleasanton has no nightlife, but I would absolutely argue otherwise.

The Drigon Dog Park is one of the greatest aspects of Union City for a pet owner. The park is fairly new, and has amenities like doggy tunnels, jumps, climbing platforms, and even fake fire hydrants. Of course, before you can think about the dog park or local pet stores, your first concern is where you can rent with a pet in Union City. There are a solid handful of complexes here that allow pets, like Avalon, Mission Sierra, Verandas, Eaves, and Medallion. All of these buildings are viewable on this site in case you want more information. There are a lot of pet friendly housing units here for animal lovers who want to settle down in Union City.

The Bay Area Rapid Transit’s commuter rail has a stop in Union City and neighboring Fremont. These two hubs help Union City residents get to San Francisco, Oakland, San Leandro, and San Jose, to name a few places, through public transportation. The city also has three additional transit operators that serve the area: AC Transit, the Dumbarton Express, and Union City Transit run local bus lines. As you can imagine, there are a lot of people here who take public transit every day.

Nationally, the median rent of (approximately) $1600 in Newark would be considered skyhigh. In fact, it comes close to doubling the national average. However, because the Bay area is, overall, one of the most expensive places to rent in the country, Newark’s rents aren’t actually considered too expensive here. Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Fremont, Union City, and Milipitas are nearby areas that are more expensive, and for some of them, drastically so. A two bedroom here will cost around the city’s median rent ($1600), but if you can settle for a studio or a one bedroom, you could easily find a place for $1,200 or so per month, which isn’t bad at all for the area.

Newark residents can sit in the middle of tranquil nature at the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, then drive five miles and be in the thick of Fremont’s urbanscape. Newark is definitely unique in that respect. The city’s Parks Division maintains 153 acres of park space for their residents, along with an aquatic and community center. Also, for the kids, Newark has a laser tagging center, a bowling alley, and a movie theater. For adults, Newark’s pubs and nightlife prove to be a bit more entertaining.

A lot of Menlo Park residents chose to live here because of its location in the Bay area. Menlo Park is within 35 miles of Cupertino, San Jose, Fremont, San Mateo, San Francisco, and Oakland. So if you work in any of these cities, commuting from your home in Menlo Park is definitely a possibility. The only downside to the Menlo Park commute is that because it’s so close to Palo Alto and Stanford University, the traffic at rush hour can be incredibly frustrating. Aside from that, though, Menlo Park is a great location to commute from.

Crime & Safety

Crime & Safety

Menlo Park is definitely one of the safer communities in the area. The town is very affluent, and if you can pay the price tag on a home here, you won’t have to worry much about crime. In that regard, the rental costs are more than worth it. The areas with the most crime are the town’s center and the northernmost neighborhoods. I’d say the safest communities are the neighborhoods just below the town’s center.

Economy and Jobs

Economy and Jobs

Just a little over ten years ago, Fremont had some of its lowest unemployment rates in its history. In December 2000, only 2.1% of the population was unemployed. When you compare that to the rate now (6.5% in May 2012), you would think it hasn’t been a great decade for the city. But, when you compare Fremont’s unemployment rates to the rest of the country, they didn’t even come close to the economic collapses other cities had. During the Recession, their unemployment rate’s peak was 8.5% in August 2010. Comparatively, other cities were in the teens, and some even hovered around 20 percent. Now, the average U.S. unemployment rate is eight percent, and Fremont is below it. With the numerous companies headquartered in Fremont, and its proximity to Silicon Valley, I think the economy will do well in the upcoming years.

Demographics

Fremont is a diverse city in a state that has recently become minority-majority. It’s just 32.8% White, and 50% Asian. The most common Asian heritages here are Indian (18.1%), Chinese (17.8%), and Filipino (6.7%). Fremont was mentioned in the famous book The Kite Runner for its large Afghan population. And because it’s home to the North California School for the Deaf, there is also a sizable deaf community here. As you can see, there are many different types of people that live in Fremont.

There are currently almost as many housing units being rented in Palo Alto as there are units that are owned. The rentals are a few thousand units behind, but the gap is increasingly smaller. If you look on this site you can find dozens of listings in the Palo Alto area, although I should warn you first that the apartment prices here are pretty hefty. But if you look at the high median income for the area, the prices start to make more sense. And if you can afford it, Palo Alto is a perfect place to live, with a cute downtown area, great schools, low crime, and close proximity to cities like Fremont, San Jose, and San Francisco.

Palo Alto is most known for its education, as it’s the home of Stanford University. The school has about 15,000 students enrolled, which is a solid percentage of Palo Alto’s total population. The school is regarded as one of the finest academic universities in the country. The academic precedent set by Stanford carries over to its residents; they’re considered some of the most educated people in the country. In fact, 26% of the population here, which is about one in four people, have a Master’s or Doctorate degree. This is the highest rate in the country. The K-12 public school system in Palo Alto is also considered one of the best in the state, and has received high acclaim in the past few years.

Suisun City is a great place to reside for anyone that is planning to commute to Vallejo, Vacaville, or Sacramento. The commute to Vallejo along I-80E usually takes about 25 minutes in light traffic, but can take longer depending on traffic, especially since many people in the area commute to Vallejo. Commuting to Vacaville is shorter than the commute to Vallejo and uses I-80W and takes about 20 minutes. The nice thing about this commute is that if there is a large accident before you commute, you can avoid the traffic by taking the backroads. The commute to Sacramento takes about an hour, depending on traffic, so it isn’t the best commute, but it isn’t impossible.

Apartment Costs

Apartment Costs

Cali Apts for Rent - Real Estate Agent

For those looking for apartments in the Vallejo area, Suisun City has the most reasonable apartments in the area, but the rent here will still be higher than the national average. A one bedroom apartment is going to cost you about $870 a month and a two bedroom will be about $1100. Compared to the surrounding areas, the average price for a two bedroom apartment is a little over $200 less per month. The only downfall to Suisun City is that it is further away from the bay than the other surrounding cities of Vallejo, but this may be worth it for the cheaper rent.

Fairfield has plenty of parks, trails, and other attractions for residents and visitors. Each neighborhood in Fairfield has a neighborhood park that normally has playground equipment, open grassy areas, a basketball court, and other features unique to that park. There are also three large community parks that are each almost 50 acres and include sports centers, skate parks, basketball courts, baseball and soccer fields, picnic areas, ponds, and dog parks. The city also has three trails, two of which are for walkers and runners and one that is for cyclists. Other attractions include three golf courses, a roller skate arena, and a large aquatics center.

According to CNNMoney job search, there are 1,313 available jobs in Fairfield and about 1,000 more within five miles of the city. The number of jobs more than doubles when the search is extended to within 15 miles of Fairfield, which is still a reasonable commute.

Napa is served by the Napa Valley Unified School District which consists of 16 elementary, six middle, and three high schools. New Technology High School is the best high school in the area and focuses on graduating students that are able to cope in the rising prevalence of technology in the business world. The school also works to prepare students with superb oral and written communication skills and the ability to make presentations and speeches. The majority of the elementary schools were also highly rated by GreatSchools and one of the middle schools was also highly rated. There are also a number of Catholic and other Sectarian schools that serve students of all grades.

Off leash dog areas in Napa are designated areas within Kennedy Park, Alston Park, and Shurtleff Park. the Kennedy Park dog area is just an open field that is designated as an area for off-leash dog play. The park is not fenced and does not have any water areas for dogs or drinking fountains, so owners must be confident that their dog will not run away and be sure to bring water for their dog on a hot day. The dog parks at Alston and Shurtleff are fenced in facilities with water stations and waste stations. As of right now there are three apartment complexes that allow cats, small dogs, and large dogs.

For anyone that loves authentic Mexican food, Vallejo is the right place for you. With almost 25% of the population being Hispanic or Latino and 16% being Mexican, it is no surprise that the food is authentic and excellent. According to reviews from yelp.com, Paleteria & Pasteleria La Michoacana is an incredible pastry and ice cream store that serves Mexican dulces. Customers favorite desert are the Mexican popsicles that are made with fresh fruit and often dipped in chocolate. Some of the most raved about eateries are the various food stands that serve tacos and burritos throughout the city for a perfect quick meal on the go.

Section 8 & Affordable

Section 8 & Affordable

Vallejo is dedicated to helping current and future residents afford proper housing for families through various programs, including the Section 8 housing voucher program. I am not certain whether the city is currently issuing section 8 vouchers, but there is housing available that accepts the vouchers and there are many other places that offer deals and other forms of assistance. There are currently four homes for rent that are accepting section 8 housing vouchers and a few more places that are located outside of the city. Since the homes for rent are single or double family homes--rather than apartments--the rent is a little higher than the average section 8 rental, but is still affordable for those with the vouchers.

Museums, wine events, farmer’s markets... Lodi has a lot going on for a small city. Despite its size, it is home to the largest museum in the county, the San Joaquin County Historical Society and Museum. Also, it has one of the oldest: the Hill House Museum is a historical house that was built in 1906. The Lodi Grape Festival is the most well-known wine fest in the area, and is very popular. The Taste of Lodi has wine tasting too, but also has award-winning food and live music. Of course, it doesn’t have as many festivals as Stockton (it has a lot), but anytime Lodi does have them they’re heavily anticipated and are always a great time.

Lodi has been known for its manufacturing since its inception, when it had flour and saw mills. Now the city manufactures goods for a number of high profile companies like General Mills, Blue Shield of California, Kubota Tractors, and Archer Daniels Midland. It’s also the home of A&W Root Beer and A&W Restaurants. However, local companies are the top employers -- the city’s school district and hospital employ almost 5000 people combined. The area’s unemployment rate is higher than usual, but that’s pretty consistent nationwide.

Manteca and the rest of the Stockton metropolitan area has a Mediterranean-like climate, where almost all of the yearly precipitation falls in the winter (80% to be exact), and the summers are very hot and dry. And by very hot I mean that the average highs for July and August are 94 and 92 degrees F. June and September aren’t much cooler, as they are in the high 80s F. Fortunately, the winters only get cool, not cold, and average lows of low 40s F in the winter, sometimes 30s F.

Manteca is part of the Stocktown metropolitan area, and is very close to the city, but also isn’t too far from other major Bay cities. As I mentioned, Stockton is the closest (15 minutes away), but Oakland and San Francisco are also within driving distance (about an hour). If you wanted to go to San Jose, it’s only a 75 minute drive or so. You probably wouldn’t be able to commute to these cities if you live in Manteca -- it’s possible but unrealistic -- but for Fridays or Saturdays when you want to get out of town, they are great options.

Local Events

Local Events

Cali Apts for Rent - Real Estate Agent

The people of Stockton hold swaths of events every year, and are big on celebrating the city’s history, as well as national holidays. There are international and children film festivals, and ethnic festivals to celebrate Greek, Italian, Jewish, Cambodian, Chinese, and Filipino cultures. Also, I couldn’t forget about the St. Patrick’s Day or Earth Day festivals (two very different festivals, believe me), or the Light Festival, or Jazzfest. Stockton is seemingly always hosting city events on the weekend, and they’re very fun! They have definitely helped in the revitalization of downtown.

Stock has a reputation for being one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S. This is true, if you look at the crime rates, it’s considered the second most dangerous place in CA for violent crime (and first in general crime), and the county is the fifth most dangerous. FBI reports had Stockton as the tenth most dangerous city in the U.S. However, to say that all of Stockton is that dangerous just isn’t true. Yes, there are problem areas but there are also friendly communities. If you meet with a real estate agent they can guide you to the right neighborhood, or you can even find crime maps online that will show you which parts of towns are safe and which aren’t.

The area has been abuzz lately with talks of the high-speed rail proposal and financing that was recently approved. This rail will stretch from Madera to Bakersfield, covering cities like LA, Sacramento, Fresno, etc, and will go 220 miles per hour. Exciting, right? It’s not anywhere near completion however, so residents will have to stick with the current options for the time being. The city is served by Amtrak and the Kern Regional Transit with trains and buses.

Bakersfield is a major source of oil, as Kern County produces the most in the U.S (10% of the nation’s supply). It also produces the fourth most agriculture in the country. These are the two main industries, but aeronautics is also big in the area. A lot of countries choose to have headquarters in Bakersfield because of their lenient taxes: they don’t have inventory/utility taxes, and is the largest city in California with the lowest taxes (it’s the same as the state minimum of $7.25%). Some of these companies are Grimmway Farms, Bolthouse Farms, and Aera Energy.
