Ocean Beach is a community that’s very receptive to animals of all breeds and sizes. In addition to offering all the usual services your pet requires, like food stores, veterinarians, and (for the extravagant) groomers and stylists, it also has a well-known, 24-hour dog beach where pups can run, swim, and enjoy the outdoors. But before you can enjoy any of this, you have to find a rental that allows pets. Unfortunately, not all of them do, but there are a good number of pet friendly apartments here. You can search for them on My Apartment Map or in local listings. Here’s one tip: find a listing that’s close to the dog beach so it’s a short walk there for you and Fido.

One thing you should know as a (hopefully) future resident of Ocean Beach is that locals here are very resistant to chain companies. High-profile brands like Starbucks and Exxon are just two corporations that were told to get lost by the community. Admittedly, a couple chains have snuck into the area, but the majority of businesses are small and locally owned, which gives the economy and shopping scene here a unique identity. Even the hotels aren’t the Holiday Inns or Hiltons you would see around the country; they’re independent and owned by locals. If you’re someone who has a small business, is interested in starting one, or just enjoy local businesses, you will fit right in here.
