There are around 40 restaurants in the Normal Heights neighborhood of San Diego. Most are casual, inexpensive places to grab a bite. However, there is one gem that shines in every aspect. The Cellar Door is an exquisite American bistro with a unique menu and upscale environment that still feels comfortable and relaxed. It is perhaps the only place to spend more than $10 on a meal. Almost half the restaurants in Normal Heights are Mexican, the local favorite being Super Cocina. There are several pizza joints around town as well; Blind Lady Ale House would be my first choice, and most locals favor Zia Gourmet’s, which is a little less expensive. Jyoti Bihanga is a vegetarian/vegan restaurant, and is one of the most popular in town for those of all diet types. There are a few Japanese, Thai, and burger spots around the neighborhood as well, all easy on the taste buds as well as the wallet.

Normal Heights holds some of the most popular events in Southern California, most happening on Adams Avenue, referred to by some as Antiques Row, due to the many antique shops lining the street. It is no surprise that they hold an annual Antique Fair there. The street also sees the annual Taste of Adams Ave event, with more than 30 restaurants offering samples and specials. Art Around Adams sees a 2 mile stretch of over 100 businesses transforming into art venues. This neighborhood is the place to be for music festivals as well; Adams Ave Roots Festival lasts 2 days in April and showcases music from many cultures, Adams Ave. Unplugged, features 3 outdoor and 21 indoor stages showcasing around 170 performances in 2 days, and the infamous Adams Avenue Street Fair, consisting of 6 stages, more than 400 vendors of food, arts, and crafts, a children’s carnival and 3 beer gardens. It is the largest free music festival in Southern California.
