Before the opening of PETCO Park baseball stadium in 2004, East Village was known for its run down store-fronts and nearly dilapidated residential buildings. Once the stadium was built, though, the East Village Business Improvement District began a whole urban renewal. The 130 blocks have since been transformed into a thriving neighborhood. Developments included many new apartment complexes and condominium mid-rises. This has made the East Village one of the most renter-friendly neighborhoods in San Diego. Neighborhoods in this area see similar rental rates, and none are very low. A studio apartment in East Village rents for an average of $1,600 monthly, one bedroom for $1,925, two bedrooms for $2,.575, and three bedrooms exceeding $3,000.

East Village Association organizes many events throughout the year. The EVA holds events specifically for its members including breakfasts, mixers, and more; of course, that’s not all. PETCO Park’s opening has assisted in community events as it is the location for many of them, including the annual East Village Appreciation Day. Other annual festivities include the Anniversary Block Party, Halloween Block Party, Entrepreneur Day, and more. Some more fun events include Light the Night Walks for cancer and Color Me Rad 5K/paint throwing extravaganza. Night and Day Street Fest and SoCal Music Festival two-day music and art festival are both held in East Village and draw residents from all over the area. Many of these events have recently been created, and more will come as the development continues.
