Manchester recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of its annexation to Richmond. Before 1910 it was its own independent city, and today it can sometime seem like this is still the case. The culture is very unique here; essentially the entire neighborhood is considered a historic district, with sites that are featured in the U.S. Registry of Historic Places and beautiful beaux arts/deco architecture. Many clients go out of their way to rent in historic districts--there is a certain charm about them, and they usually have a distinct aesthetic. In my opinion, Manchester is the premier historic area in Richmond, and I would highly recommend renting here.

The James River splits Manchester from Richmond, but they are still just a mile and a half apart. There are three ways you can cross the river: either the S 9th Street or S 14th Street bridges, or on Interstate 95. If you don’t have a car, there are a few buses that can take you over the bridges. It’s only a ten or fifteen minute ride, and it’s usually a very reliable transit system. If you’re bold, or in great shape, you can walk, which would take around a half hour. Unfortunately, there aren’t any rail stations in Manchester.
