The Rockaways, a peninsula of Long Island, is known as a “bedroom community”, meaning that it is typically residential. While the boardwalk once made the rockaways a tourist driven area, development in other areas of New York has taken away from that, and left room for many housing developments. In 2002, a “revival” was initiated in the Rockaways, and in 2008 New York City Council approved building of five new communities spanning 280 blocks, all for your renting pleasure! With all these new developments, it is surprising that The Rockaways still have some of the lowest rental rates in Queens; studio apartments show an average of $935 per month, one bedrooms for around $1,100, two bedrooms for $1,450, and three bedrooms for $1,650. Rates tend to be lower in the fall and winter.

Many of the events that take place in The Rockaways are centered around the arts. The Rockaway Theater Company, Rockaway Artists Alliance, and Rockaway Music and Arts Council organize various activities and entertainment regularly. The RMAC organizes trips year-round, summer concerts, art exhibitions, and coordinates with schools to create student art programs. The Theater Company and Artists Alliance both schedule regular performances and exhibitions, many in Fort Tilden. The neighborhood also organizes annual festivals, random events, and groups holding regular events, such as the Walk, Talk & Laugh Group and Rockaway Youth Task Force.
