Public Transportation

About one out of every ten Roxborough residents take public transportation, which is a fairly high number. This makes sense, because most areas of central Philadelphia are too far to walk or bike to (downtown is about eleven miles away), so you need to drive or take public transit to reach them. The most easily accessible public transit option is buses, because there are a number of them that serve the neighborhood. However, in the southeastern corner of Roxborough is the Ivy Ridge station, which is a stop on SEPTA’s NOR light rail line. This service is popular amongst residents as well.

Roxborough has a long educational history, as its been one of the feeder communities for the two oldest all-boy and all-girl Catholic high schools: Roman Catholic High and J.W. Hallahan High. Also, sadly, one of the oldest schools in the country, William Levering School (founded in 1748) recently closed. However, there are still six public schools operating in Roxborough, and they are run by the Philadelphia City School District. Philadelphia University and St. Joseph’s University are two prominent post-secondary institutions that are very close to the Roxborough neighborhood, and a lot of kids who grow up in Roxborough continue their educational careers there after high school.
