Fishtown lets the city of Philadelphia handle the holiday celebrations, but the neighborhood has come up with its own ways to celebrate the community. They hold annual events, such as the River City Festival and Fall Festival, as well as random activities, including penny parties, dance parties, flea markets, outdoor movies, and more. There are art displays such as openings at O.U.R Gallery and ‘Pay What You Can’ plays, and workshops type events such as ‘Crunchy Mamas & Papas’ get togethers, centerpiece workshops, canning, bulb forcing, homebrewing, and couples cooking classes. Fishtown has long been characterized as a working class Irish neighborhood. While most residents still trace their ancestry back to European Catholic (German, Polish, or Irish), in recent years, the neighborhood has seen some gentrification, bringing more upper-class dining, entertainment, and housing options. The Sugarhouse Casino opened in September 2010, and with it came thousands of jobs, more traffic from outside the neighborhood, and lots of development in Fishtown. The neighborhood remains mostly white, with a higher percentage of Caucasian (73%) than Philadephia as a whole.
