The typical price of a rental in Mar Vista is around $2500 (based on the average two bedroom costs). This is roughly in the same ballpark as West Los Angeles, Century City, and Sawtelle. Other nearby areas like Playa Del Ray, Playa Vista, and Venice are significantly more expensive. Overall, I’d say that Mar Vista is an affordable (albeit slightly more expensive) area of the city, despite the fact that its average rent is significantly more than the majority of most U.S. towns and cities. You have to factor in how high-priced Los Angeles real estate is as a whole. Of course, there are other parts of town you can live in for cheaper rent, but they won’t be as nice as Mar Vista.

If you have a family and plan on living in Mar Vista, you should take a look at the schools in the area. In my experiences, I’ve found most, if not all of them, to be great schools with excellent teachers. The only thing I should point out is that Mar Vista doesn’t have its own public high school. Kids who live here go to nearby Venice High School, which I hear good things about. However, this isn’t the only option. There are plenty of private schools in and around the neighborhood, and the city, that you can send your children to. However, if you decide to go with public schools, the ones in Mar Vista are run by the Los Angeles Unified School District.
