Many Journal Square residents choose this neighborhood because of its close proximity to New York City, and more specifically, Manhattan. When you compare the cost of living in Manhattan to Journal Square, you’ll see it’s noticeably cheaper. You can find a nice two bedroom apartment here for as cheap as $1500 a month; in Manhattan, that’s the average price of a studio. If you somehow found a $1500/month two bedroom rental in Manhattan, it would probably be the size of a closet or in an inconvenient location. So, on their own, Journal Square’s rents may seem a bit high -- it’s tough to find any listings under $1000 -- but compared to New York City and some parts of Jersey City, they’re affordable.

New York City commuters love Jersey City and Journal Square because they don’t have to travel far to get to their jobs every day. Journal Square is just four miles from downtown Manhattan. If there were no traffic the drive would take about ten minutes, but because it’s New York, it may take a bit longer. And compared to most commutes, this one isn’t too bad. If you don’t own a car, you can still get to the city from Journal Square. The neighborhood has a station for PATH’s red and orange commuter rail lines that go to New York. It’s only a twenty minute ride or so, which is also a fairly short commute.
