Restaurants
Local Guide - Real Estate Agent
Rice Military is home to around 35 restaurants, of all styles and price ranges. This is not the barbecue, deep south Houston area you may be expecting. There are a few Tex-Mex spots, El Tiempo being the most popular, but otherwise you will see the same mix here as any city in the country. The most acclaimed restaurant in the neighborhood is Benjy’s, an American style eatery with a unique menu, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Coppa Ristorante is a nice, comfortable but a bit pricey Italian place, El Rey Taqueria is great for Mexican food, and The Blue Fish is a fantastic Japanese sushi spot. There are tapas bars, Cuban, Spanish and Mediterranean restaurants. Truly something for every craving, except Texas barbecue, but Texas is a big place.
Demographics
Local Guide - Real Estate Agent
Rice Military is a predominantly white, middle class neighborhood. There are approximately 13,766 residents. Of that, 58% are Caucasian, 10% African American, 1.5% are Asian, and 27% claim to be “other”. These numbers show less diversity than Houston’s average. However, when the neighborhood was polled to calculate predominate language, it was a 50/50 split between English and Spanish. Around 50% of residents are married couples, and most have children. Economically, the neighborhood is more diverse. The largest grouping of income is between $10 and $25 thousand, which encompasses 22% of residents. 15% make more than $100 thousand, and 11% below $10 thousand. Rice Military was once considered a rural area, but is now considered more urban, being referred to by the Houston Chronicle as “nearly at capacity”.
