Apartment Costs

Whiteaker is a working class neighborhood, and the property prices here are very affordable. There aren’t many apartments, but a lot of houses are for rent instead. In my eyes, I think it’s preferable to live in a house over an apartment. And this doesn’t necessarily mean that the costs are more expensive. One or two bedroom places will run you anywhere from $500-800. Some of the rentals on the lower side of that price range are fixer uppers, but you really can’t beat the low monthly rent.
Demographics

Whiteaker is home to a lot of different types of groups than you’re probably used to seeing, and I don’t mean ethnically. Young activists in the late ‘90s created protests and near-riots in the neighborhood when they organizing tree sitting protests, and took a stand against corporate capitalism by vandalizing local businesses. The police called them anarchists. In addition, there are also large populations of artists, animal groups, and environmentalist groups located in Whiteaker. I’m not sure if I would go as far as to say that the area has a lot of counter-culture groups and activity, but people here love expressing and fighting for their opinions.
