You’re missing out if you haven’t heard about Downtown Des Moines’s brilliant “skywalk” infrastructure. This is a four mile stretch of elevated bridges that connect the buildings in downtown, and are enclosed to keep the elements outside. This is perfect for getting around in the winter, when it’s cold and snowy outside, or during a rainstorm in the summer. You may not be able to take it from your apartment to your place of work -- although this is possible with precise planning -- but it’s the largest skywalk system in the country, and it covers a lot of ground. Aside from the skywalk, there aren’t many public transit options besides buses.
Nightlife

Des Moines isn’t exactly one of the premier nightlife destinations in the country, but for a smaller city it can hold its own. The Simon Estes Riverfront Amphitheater and Wells Fargo Arena are two of the most popular music venues in the city, and both have their own styles. Small venues like People’s and the Vaudeville Mews also fill up on the weekends. The Civic Center of Greater Des Moines hosts Broadway shows and the Des Moines Metro Opera also has great shows for the artistic crowds. Elsewhere, the city has a great selection of bars, lounges, and clubs alike.
