There have been many steps taken by Highland’s community to make the neighborhood a more desirable place to live. Bridges to downtown were built, residents have worked to restore and preserve historic districts (which improved the market for historic houses in these areas), and most importantly for renters, there has been an increase of high-end condos and lofts. Old structures such as dilapidated buildings and parking lots are being torn down and housing is being built there instead. With the new convenient accessibility to downtown and the improved housing opportunities, Highland has become one of the most renter friendly neighborhoods in Denver.

Highland used to be removed from downtown Denver, but developments in the past two decades have made the two areas conveniently connected. More specifically, three bridges (the Platte River Bridge, Denver Millenium Bridge, and Highland Bridge) were constructed. These three roads are now frequented by commuters who travel between the two areas every day. Buses also make the commute easier for residents who are either temporarily or permanently carless. Highland, at three miles away from downtown, is further from downtown than some neighborhoods, but steps have been taken to make the commute friendlier to people who live here.
