The history of Woodlawn is very involved with race, from tensions in the early 20th century to movements in the ‘60s to current issues. African-Americans made up almost 100% of the population just a couple decades ago in the early ‘90s, with a median household income of around $13,000. But in the past decade, the White population has grown and is currently at almost 7 percent, which would be very low for any other neighborhood in the U.S., but is high here. The area is being gentrified, which has revitalized the community in some ways but has also upset locals in others. Racial tensions aren’t nearly as bad as they used to be, to say the least, but there are still underlying issues going on today.

A large area of Woodlawn, especially on its eastern side, is made up of public park space. Most of this belongs to Jackson Park, which is a 500 acre public park that’s positioned right against Lake Michigan. In fact, there is an 18-mile lakefront trail that runs through it where cyclists, joggers, and walkers enjoy the sights and weather in the warmer months. Also during the warm months is when the nearby 63rd Street beach (site of the city’s oldest beach house) becomes popular with locals. Other places to visit here are the Osaka Garden, the local lagoons, and the Republic, a well-known local statue.
