Humboldt Park’s safety depends entirely on where you live in the area. If you look at a crime map, you’ll see that West Humboldt Park, and the central part of the neighborhood (west of the actual Humboldt public park) have crime rates that are higher than average. But the Humboldt public park marks a threshold of safety for the city. To the east and northeast of this park is a string of safe neighborhoods with low crime rates. To the west of it, however, in communities like Humboldt Park and Austin, the crime rates are higher. In practical terms, this threshold isn’t as strictly defined as it looks on a crime map, but a general rule of thumb for the neighborhood is that the Eastern side near the public park is overall safer than the Western side.

Humboldt Park is known as a large center for Puerto Ricans in the Chicago area. In fact, it’s the only officially recognized Puerto Rican neighborhood in the U.S., and the Paseo Boricua, a strip of the neighborhood dedicated to Puerto Rican traditions and heritage, is the only place outside of Puerto Rico to be given permission to fly an official Puerto Rican flag. No other neighborhood in any other American city, even cities like New York City or Miami that have large Puerto Rican populations, have received this honor. Needless to say, you will recognize the cultural pride and traditions the first day you spend here.
