Edgewater has a noticeably large gay population. About 8% of the population here are members of the LGBT community, which dwarfs the U.S. average of 1.1%. There are also a number of gay institutions, such as the Congregation Or Chadash synagogue and the Gerber/Hart library, which is the largest of its kind in the Midwest. The rest of the neighborhood is very diverse as well. There is a large native African population, with people from Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Somalia living in Edgewater. Native Americans, young families, college students, and young professionals have also made a significant impact on the demographic report for the area.

It’s strange to think about going to the beach in an urban city like Chicago, but in Edgewater this is a popular activity for locals when the summer weather heats up. The two most popular are Foster Beach and Osterman Beach, or better known as Hollywood Beach. Chicago’s largest park, Lincoln Park, runs through several neighborhood, but its northern boundaries are located right here in Edgewater. I should also mention that the coastline on the lake provides great bicycle access, which many residents use for transportation and exercise. As you can imagine, this neighborhood glows with life in the summer when everyone is out enjoying the local recreational amenities.
