East Garfield Park as a whole isn’t considered one of Chicago’s safe neighborhoods. I’d have to say that the area with the least crime is Madison Street and Kenzie Avenue, but I’m not sure if I would recommend walking around the rest of the neighborhood late at night. Directly to the east and northeast of the community are a pocket of very safe neighborhoods, like West Town, East Village, Wicker Park, and Ukrainian Park. It becomes more dangerous when you move west towards E. Garfield, W. Garfield, and Fifth City. Locals claim that Garfield is safer than it used to be, but if this is a major concern for you (for example, if you’re moving with a family) then you should look east of the neighborhood.

The Dwight D. Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) defines the southern boundaries of East Garfield Park, conveniently providing a direct route to downtown, or if residents need to travel further, it connects with the Kennedy Expressway. No matter where you live in the neighborhood, you won’t be further than a few minutes (by car) from 290. There are also public transportation services available in the form of two CTA rail lines (Blue and Green), and east-west and north-south CTA bus routes.
