Dilworth is one of Charlotte’s most urban neighborhoods. High population density is related to crime rates, and Dilworth is no exception. This neighborhood does show lower rates than Charlotte as a whole, but not by much. In the most recent annual statistics, Dilworth was shown to be the location of more than 50% of all the city’s crime, including murder, rape, robbery, and motor vehicle theft. 2012 statistics through September showed an increase from the same time last year of 4%, with a 12% rise in violent crimes alone. The neighborhood’s police and residents have organized methods to assist in lowering these rates. Dilworth Community Development Association (DCDA) has organized a Neighborhood Safety Committee, which holds meetings attended by police officers, allowing residents to speak openly with them. Dilworthonline.org has a safety section, which provides information about all opportunities and information pertaining to crime and safety in Dilworth.

Charlotte was once a much smaller city, and when it was, Dilworth was a community hub for events and social life. Freedom Park, although now a smaller part of Charlotte, has remained a popular attraction. This is still the location of Festival in the Park, an annual celebration of Charlotte. Other festivals include the Dilworth Jubilee, Greek Festival, and Fall Fall Festival. There are also annual holiday events, such as craft making, ladies holiday party, Halloween parties and July fireworks. There are recreation events, such as marathons, criteriums, and charity walks, such as the most recent Visionwalk for blindness. Certain Dilworth events display the close-knit vibe of residents, such as Newcomers Parties, wine and cheese events held for new residents in a neighbor’s home, and the Monthly Beer Summit, held at local watering holes, coinciding with sporting events.
