The top three safest areas of Cambridge, according to Neighborhood Scout, are all located in Neighborhood 9. They are Fresh Pond Parkway/Auburn Street, as well as Fresh Pond/Vassar Lane, and Concord Ave/Alewife Brook Pky. I would say that Neighborhood 9 on the whole is one of the safest neighborhoods in Cambridge; perhaps the safest. However, like any community, there are shady parts too. Crime rates are higher near North Cambridge (although most of this area is outside of Neighborhood 9’s official boundaries) and also near Harvard’s campus. You should watch out for Strawberry Hills and the Cambridge Highlands to the east of the neighborhood as well.

Harvard University is located to the immediate southeast of the neighborhood, but it’s practically considered to be part of the community. So many of the students, faculty, and alumni of the school live here, and the school owns some of the buildings and properties here. If you are living or working there, this is a great area to consider working in. If not, you should be weary that much of the culture here involves Harvard. It is avoidable, however. The northeast part of the neighborhood near Porter Square is a quickly growing area with young professionals and families that are not connected to the school.
