The commute from East Bakersfield’s residential areas to Downtown Bakersfield is quick and easy. You can either hop on Route 178, on the north side of the neighborhood, or take a route through Beale, Sumner, and 21st Street. Either way, you should be able to get there in 15 minutes or less. But the truly lucky residents won’t have to commute to Downtown every day, they will have a job in East Bakersfield’s commercial district, which is located around Baker Street. Hillcrest, College Heights, and La Cresta/Alta Vista are a few other nearby neighborhoods.

East Bakersfield has one of the shortest winters in the country, which is evident when you look at the number of sunny days it has per year (almost 200). The winters are when most of the rain falls in Bakersfield, which is only around an inch per winter month. In the summer, it’s not unusual for an entire month to pass without any rain. This is typical of the city’s desert climate, as is heat. There are usually over 100 days per year where the temperature tops 90 degrees, and the summers are incredibly hot. But the rest of the year is much more bearable, as temps stay in the 60s and 70s in the winter and spring, and autumns are warm.
