Barton Hills is the more laid back area of southeast Austin, with many locals referring to themselves as “bubbas”, which is not, as it sounds, a term for the redneck type, but rather for older hippy types. It is a picturesque, mostly residential neighborhood neighborhood with few commercial properties and mostly ranch-style homes. There are low-rise apartments and condos along the western edge, renters are just about as common as owners; out of 7,993 residents, 26% are married couples. 80% of residents in Barton Hills are caucasian, 12% Hispanic, 4% Asian, and 2% are African American. Median age in this neighborhood is 33, and the median annual income is $52,000, slightly higher than Austin’s average. Crime rates here are lower than Austin city crime rates, although both are higher than the national average. Barton Hills is the slower, safer side of Austin.

Barton Hills has some terrific outdoor recreation spots. Barton Creek Greenbelt nature preserve in particular brings people from all over the country to experience the preserve’s 809 acres of swimming, hiking, biking, and rock climbing opportunities. At the end of the preserve is the Barton Creek Pool, a natural swimming pool fed by Barton Creek. Umlauf Sculpture Garden is a walk through garden full of all types of sculpture coated with wax, which allows viewers to touch and interact with the art. It is quite the alternative to the usual quiet, buttoned-up type of museum. Zilker Hills Botanical Garden is also an easy on the eyes, peaceful way to spend a warm afternoon in Barton Hills. This neighborhood is far more into the simple things in life; as far as movie theaters, malls, and bars, Barton Hills is lacking. In the city of Austin, though, nothing is too far away.
