Although Virginia Highland is known as a streetcar suburb, for gaining its popularity through streetcar service, there are no longer streetcars serving the neighborhood. It is now served by six bus routes, all providing connections to various rail stations around Atlanta. Route 2 connects to Inman Park and Edgewood stations, route 6 also to Inman Park, route 16 to Five Points rail station, and route 99 travels to Midtown station. Route 36 begins at Midtown station and travels to Avondale station. Fare for all one-way travels are $2.50. Busses and rails are all provided by the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, MARTA, and operate from 4:45 am to 1 am during the week, and 6 am to 1 am on the weekends. There are other transit opportunities in Atlanta, but MARTA busses is the primary in Virginia Highland.

Virginia Highland is an eclectic neighborhood of Atlanta; in 2012 Creative Loafing magazine named “VaHi” the Best Walkable Neighborhood, following its honor in 2011 of Atlanta Magazine’s Favorite Neighborhood of All. Much of the fun in VaHi is focused on the great outdoors and arts. There are three public parks in this neighborhood: John Howell Memorial, Orne Park, which has Clear Creek, a runoff of the Chattahoochee, running through it, and New Highland, an eco-friendly park and rain garden. It is also home to one of seven arboretums in Atlanta. For some fun indoors, Freeze Dried Monkey comedy club, The Drunken Unicorn music venue, Solomon Projects art gallery, and the infamous Blind Willies jazz & blues club provide some unique, local flavor. For a mix of the outdoors and the arts, the two day Summerfest and annual Taste of the Highlands showcase the best of Virginia Highland’s food, music, and art.
