Local Guide - Real Estate Agent
In most of Pine Hills’ housing listings you will see the word “student” or “campus” in the title. It’s no secret that this is a community dominated by college students, and that the majority of renters are in their early 20s. If you are a young person in Albany, whether you’re in school still and are looking to move off-campus, or are a recent graduate, this neighborhood is perfect for you. The housing is affordable, the leases are fit to match the academic calendar, and your neighbors will be people your age. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend renting here to older adults, but I wouldn’t rule it out either. If you can snag a cheap listing and don’t mind living in a college area, why not do it?
Demographics
Local Guide - Real Estate Agent
The school with the largest presence in the city, the University of Albany (SUNY), doesn’t have any academic buildings in Pine Hills, but there is a residence hall here called the Alumni Quad. Also, it’s a popular site for off-campus students to live, as there are lots of college bars and cheap housing here. The large student population has led some to call Pine Hills a “student ghetto,” and this nickname was especially prevalent after an infamous 2011 student riot. If you rent here you should be aware that this is a rowdy neighborhood on the weekends, and if you live in an apartment building with college kids it can oftentimes be louder than you’re comfortable with. Make sure you research the part of the community you want to live in before settling down.
