Hi, my friend and I will be joining RIT this fall and we are looking for a 2 bedroom apartment close to the RIT. Is there any particular locality that's preferred over the rest for students?
It depends on what you want your commute to be like, in terms of time and means of transportation. A lot of students like the city life and choose to live in downtown Rochester. This may be a bit more of a hike, but they're willing to travel a bit further every day. Other people will live a block or two from campus and walk or bike, and it's a short commute. So it really depends. Here's a map of the area:

If I were you I would look for some properties that suit your needs and are to your liking first, and then worry about their distances after.
