The crime rate at NVCC is fairly low. In the past couple years, all arrests have been drug- and alcohol-related, and on-campus, the only crimes really reported are minor thefts, and in 2009, a couple assaults. The Alexandria campus of NVCC is more dangerous. The NOVA alert system sends messages to mobile phones if there are any incidents students should be aware of, and even. Students feel very safe on-campus. Annandale is a pretty safe town to live in, too. The highest rate of crime in Annandale is around Hummer Rd/Walton Rd, and the Beltway is considered the divider between the nicer areas and less nice areas.

About 55,000 people live in Annandale. The population is 64.5% White, 20% Asian, 6% Black, and Hispanic/Latinos account for 14.5%. For every 100 females, there are only 93 males, so there are slightly more women here. About 7% of the population is below the poverty line.
