Apartments Near Campus - Property Manager
Harrisonburg’s crime rate is lower than both state and national averages; the chances of being a victim of a violent crime here are one in 500, and for a property crime, one in 47. Unfortunately, the parts of town with the highest crime rates are the ones that surround JMU’s campus (because it’s located near the city’s center). The campus itself has the third lowest crime rate in Harrisonburg, but for off-campus students, closer isn’t always better. Massanetta Springs, Green Mount/Linville, Melrose/Zenda, and Lacey Spring/Arkton are some of the safest bets.

More often than not, freshmen at JMU aren’t allowed to have parking permits, which forces them to stay on-campus where they can walk to class and take advantage of Harrisonburg’s buses to get around town. However, when they become upperclassmen, it’s standard for them to move off-campus and find housing elsewhere in the area. The vast majority of these students live in Harrisonburg, thus the average commute by vehicle isn’t longer than ten or fifteen minutes. It also helps out-of-town commuters that JMU sits right on Interstate 81.
