Fairfax has appeared on Forbes’ list of US Places to Live Well, and landed the #3 spot in ‘09. One of the reasons it earned this recognition is its safety. Fairfax has a small city (just over 20,000 residents) that keeps teenagers and students alike out of trouble with an effective police force and a strong sense of community. There are numerous festivals, cultural events, parades, and holiday celebrations every year that exemplify this. When you factor in the high quality of education on all levels here, the high median salary, and the small town feel, Fairfax is a great place for both students and families to live.

George Mason is one of the most diverse colleges in Virginia; in fact, it was named the #5 most diverse in the country by the Princeton Review. While the majority of the students are White, there are also a large number of enrollments of Asian, Black, and Hispanic students. Overall, the school has around 33,000 students (both undergrad and grad included). This makes it the largest university in Virginia. With GMU and nearby Northern Virginia Community College, the Fairfax area is overflowing with college students.
