There is a noticeable different in crime rates between the east and west halves of SLC, with the east being extremely safe. In all categories, the crime rate in SLC doubles and triples the Utah averages, except in the hate crime category, since hate crimes are somewhat rarer here. Murders, burglaries, and arson rates are all on the decline, though assaults and sex offenses remain unchanged. There are a high number of sex offenders here, about 1 in every 288 people. The safest areas here are around the University of Utah, Riverton, Cottonwood Heights, and West Jordan. The worst areas are Pioneer Park, Rose Park, Glendale, and Midvale. At SLCC, the Taylorsville and South City campuses have the most incidents of crime, though across all campuses, the only reported crimes are burglary/robbery/larceny and the occasional drug or liquor related arrest. In the past four years, the only other crime reported on campus was a forcible sex offense in 2011 at South City.

The unemployment rate in Salt Lake City was 5.1% as of December 2012, lower than the national average. SLC has a bursting, bustling economy, home to a Fortune 500 company, two Fortune 1000 companies, the SLC International Airport, the Sinclair Oil Corporation, one of the largest potato producers in the US, and a tourism market that has been growing since the 2002 Winter Olympics Games were held there. Both the economy and housing market are overall strong. Unfortunately, there is a fair amount of discrimination against those who are not Mormon in SLC, though it is not widely talked about, and many employers illegally ask you about your religion.
