Traffic & Commuting

Traffic & Commuting

The University of Houston’s main campus near South Central Houston and the Greater Third Ward is right in the middle of a triangle of freeways. To its east, the Gulf Freeway runs diagonally past the campus. The South Freeway is to the west, and the South Loop East Freeway is a bit further to the south. Because of this, the campus is isolated from the rest of the traffic in the city, like in Downtown or the Business District. As a commuter, you may hit this traffic on the freeways on the way to or from class, but aside from that it shouldn’t be too much of an obstacle for you.

The Kinder Institute for Urban Research conducted a survey in 2012 that found Houston to be the most diverse city in the United States. The University of Houston follows in its city’s footsteps, with a population of students that was named the second most diverse by U.S. News and World Report. The school boasts an enrollment of more than 40,000 students, which ranks third in the state. With so many students and so much diversity, it will be easy to find a circle of friends that you fit in with. If you need some help, there are hundreds of students organizations you can join. Who knows; you could even meet your future roommate in one of the orgs.
