Much of the economy revolves around the petroleum industry, and the success of maritime shipping in Houston. As of June 2012, the unemployment rate in Pasadena was 9.7%, still somewhat high. While the cost of living in Pasadena is around 15% lower than average, the unemployment rate could be better to help families. SJC has a Career & Employment Center and an online job search database to help those seeking work. The school also hosts Career Expos, employer panels, and workshops, to aid their students.

Houston is just a 20-minute drive from Pasadena, which is good news since Pasadena is pretty much home to strictly dive bars, crappy clubs, sorry sports bars, and a Hooter’s. There are a couple places that aren’t so bad. Bam Bam has dancing and cheap drinks, and Gene’s is pretty fun for a dive. Corner Pocket gets pretty busy since it often has a live DJ, karaoke, lots of pool tables, and dart boards. Barefoot Tina’s has pool tables too, and smoking is allowed inside, like most of the local dives. SJC has many activities on campus for those seeking something besides the bar scene, including events at the Student Center, a gym, and numerous clubs.
