Houston’s light rail service is one of the most used facets of the city’s public transportation system. Fortunately, Rice has a stop (Rice Station) on the rail, and it’s just a few stops away from Downtown Houston. This is the best, most popular, and easiest method of transportation for students who don’t have a car to get to Downtown. The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, which runs the light rail, also operates buses that stop at Rice. Like the metro rail, it can take students anywhere in the city. The bus and light rail will be your best friend if you live off-campus and don’t have a car; they can take you back and forth from your apartment to class every day.

Rice University has a large, beautiful, and urban campus in Houston. Hermann Park, located adjacent to the university across Main Street, is essentially part of the campus. You will see students there on sunny days tossing a frisbee, studying, or just sitting with friends. The park is also home to the Houston Zoo, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, a reflection pool, and McGovern Lake. There’s a lot to see and enjoy here, but most importantly it’s just a pleasant place to be on a nice day. Rice is also just four miles away from downtown Houston, which is accessible via public transportation or Route 59. This is arguably the best place in the city to spend a weekend.
