There are a few areas of Wichita Falls that have higher crime rates than normal. Monroe Street/Kell Boulevard, Call Field Road/Kemp Boulevard, Old Iowa Park Road/North Beverly Drive, and North Rosewood Ave/Harding Street are all areas that have elevated crime rates. There is gang activity, graffiti, vandalism in some areas, but the area of town where MWSU is located is clean, beautiful, and friendly. It seems to be downtown, really, where crime is centered. The far west part of WF is safe to live, as are the tiny towns in WF, Petrolia, and Byers. At MWSU each year, there are usually a couple sex offenses, at least 30 burglaries, and a couple arrests related to drugs or alcohol.

Around 6,500 students attend MWSU. There are slightly more women than men, with the student body being 58% female and 44% male. Around 63% of students are White, 12% Black, 12% Hispanic, 8% from a foreign country, 3% Asian, and 1% American Indian. The college itself is more diverse than the city it is in. Wichita Falls has a little over 100,000 residents, of which 72% are White, 15% are Hispanic, 9% are Black, 2% are Asian, 2% are Multiracial, and 1% is American Indian. Half of the population is made up of married couples.The biggest employer in town is the Sheppard Air Force Base with over 12,200 employees, and the school district, which has over 2,000 employees. About 80% of the population over 25 has a high school diploma. About 53% of citizens are Southern Baptist, and 15% Catholic.
