When it comes to safety in Houston, usually the neighborhoods west of downtown are safer than east, and downtown itself has spotty crime areas. The safest communities, like Satsuma, Falcon Pass, Clodine, Olcott, and Melendy, are all far from downtown; you could even say some are on the outskirts of the city. This isn’t a coincidence. As you move further away from downtown, what you lose in commuting convenience you gain in safety and lower crime rates. Houston has a negative reputation for its crime, but it really depends on which part of the city you live in.
