ACC isn’t as close to the city as one would expect, but rather it’s 20 miles outside of downtown. You can use Capital Metro buses to get there by public transportation, but in reality the majority of students drive. This is true for getting around the area in general. If you ask a student directions for getting on and off 183A or the MoPac Expressway they’d probably be able to help you out, but if you asked them where to catch a bus, many of them would be just as lost as you. Simply put, driving is vastly more popular here. If you’re ever closer to the city and want to get around, however, whether for a weekend or in an apartment for the semester, I would recommend checking out public transit.

Most of Austin’s best nightlife spots are a half hour drive away from ACC, sometimes even longer when factoring in weekend or rush hour traffic. But more often that not they’re worth the long drive. Austin is unlike many of Texas’s larger cities in many ways, and is known for its unique cultural scenes that can’t be found in any other part of the state. There’s a reason why the famous SXSW music and technology festival is held here--it’s a city that’s fertile ground for new indie bands and new start up tech companies alike. And their nightlife reflects this variety; you’ll probably spend most nights doing completely new and unexpected things, or enjoying a musician or artist you’ve never heard of before.
