CARTA, the local public transit operator, runs bus lines that are specifically targeted towards students. Route #14 only runs during the school year, then stops in the summer. There are also five other routes that stop by the university’s campus. The best part is, all students have to do is show their IDs and they can ride for free. Essentially, they have free access to any part of the city. Most students don’t rely solely on public transportation to get around though: 86 percent of students have a vehicle on campus. If you’re looking to move off-campus, keep in mind that commuting via public transportation is a perfectly viable plan.

Chattanooga’s neighborhoods with the lowest crime rates are typically on the outskirts of the city. The three safest communities are gathered in a cluster in the southeastern corner of Chattanooga: Valleyview (lowest crime in the city), West View (second lowest), and Ryall Springs (third lowest). Harrison and Hammillville are two other safe neighborhoods located on the city’s borders. Obviously, there neighborhoods are a bit further away from campus. If you want neighborhoods close to downtown with low crime, check out Dallas Heights and the Northside.
