Very few crimes happen at Roane State. Of over 6500 students across its several campuses, less than a handful of thefts are reported each year, and that’s about it. The campuses are well-lit, and security guards are always present. Harriman is a really safe small town, and RSCC is in an area with a low crime rate. Thefts are the most common crime here, and there are around 20 stolen cars a year. There is no murder, but there are 47 registered sex offenders, which is a lot for the size of the population. It means 1 in every 140 people is a sex offender here.

About 7,000 people live in Harriman. About 90% of the population is White, and 7.5% Black. The remaining 2.5% are Native American, Hispanic, and Asian. About 42% of the population consists of married couples. Women outweigh men by a lot in this town. For every 100 women over 18, there are only 78.5 men. About 32% of the population under the age of 18 is below the poverty line. At RSCC, more than half of the student body is between the ages of 17 and 20. Women just about double the number of men. Nearly 90% of the student body is White.
