CSU is technically in Charleston, but the city’s downtown area is 18 miles south of campus. Many students use vehicles to drive back and forth from the city and campus, or from campus to their off-campus apartment, but others don’t have that privilege (or don’t want to pay for gas and repairs). For students who rely on public transportation, CARTA--the local transit agency--runs buses close enough to campus that students can take them to downtown Charleston or anywhere in between. Route #10 is closest to campus (you can catch it on the southern tip), but XP1 (an express bus), which is a little further away, is quicker.

Students who love urban environments and their rich culture and students who love the great outdoors will both be satisfied with CSU’s location. Charleston, a large city with a great art and music scene, is to the south. The Francis Marion National Forest, a sprawling park with wilderness area, hiking and biking trails, campsites, bays, and everything else that a nature lover could ask for. Depending on your preferences, you will probably be making day trips south to the city or east to the forest. The coast of the Atlantic Ocean is also within driving distance of campus, and is a beautiful destination in warm weather.
