Public Transportation

Public Transportation

Rafalina Alvarado - Real Estate Agent

Brown and RISD have a collaborative bus system called the SafeRIDE that’s free for students. It won’t pick you up on the other side of Providence like the city buses would, but if you’re trying to get around campus, or if you live nearby, this is an ideal way to commute. As I mentioned RIPTA also runs buses that travel around the city, and just like SafeRIDE, students ride free! The larger cities in the Northeast generally have great public transportation infrastructures, and Providence is a great example. In addition to the buses, it’s also served by Amtrak and the MBTA’s commuter rail, which primarily provides service to Boston and the rest of Massachusetts.

Providence hasn’t always had the best reputation when it comes to crime and safety in the city. This has often times conflicted with the other rep the city has, which is one of the East Coast’s best college cities. But I’ll tell you one thing I’m certain about: Brown is in one of the safest parts of the city. It’s located right on College Hill, and shares downtown real estate with RISD, Johnson & Wales, URI Providence, and several other colleges. All these schools have ensured that their security presence is strong and capable, and have worked with the city to make the downtown community the best in the city for its students.
