Penn State is a college with a very high number of sex offenses annually. Assaults are fairly common as well, as is burglary, and drug and alcohol arrests. Vandalism is a problem. Even considering its size, Penn State is crime-ridden. Students often complain there is not a big enough security presence on-campus, though the university has begun making safety a top priority, offering more police escorts than ever.

Penn State is surrounding by small towns. The nearest big-gish town near Penn State is probably Bellefonte and it only has around 6,200 residents. Altoona has around 50,000 residents, though it’s nearly an hour from Penn State. In any case, this whole area of Pennsylvania has an unemployment rate averaging between 7-8% as of January 2013, better than the national average. Penn State has numerous student employment opportunities on-campus, as well as services to help students find employment. There are enough jobs on-campus for well over a thousand students.
